DPF Cleaning

I have never seen the warning light come on to date and have never resorted to eating fuel drives no extra because in the middle of a regen when I reached my destination.

My wife’s Fabia diesel is doing around 4K per year but has also never lit this warning light. It is not short trips which cause the issue but never doing long runs to clear the dpf. A return trip of around 45 miles every two weeks or so seem to be enough to keep it healthy.

I now only do short runs other than two annual holiday very long runs and I’ve studied the situation carefully with the help of the Android app. The short runs cause more frequent regeneration of the dpf which I strongly advise one does keep driving until complete if possible - I always do - with one recent exception. My short runs cause a fairly frequent regeneration of about every 200 miles. On my infrequent long runs (over 100 miles and back the regeneration frequency increases to up to about 450 miles. In either case the condition of the filter - residual ash etc after regeneration is the same. So short runs do not cause any permanent clogging of the dpf any more than long runs - just more frequent regeneration. My fear is for anyone who only does very short runs and are also perhaps not aware of and perhaps never allow a regeneration to complete. In those extreme conditions there may indeed be a premature dpf clogging problem.

My observations using the App live during driving show that increased speeds/revs do nothing to provoke or enhance a normal regeneration cycle when it happens. I found that extreme revs can provoke a small amount of regeneration which stops at lower revs. These high revs were way above motorway driving speeds in a lower gear and not really worth bringing into the equation.

I talked that my car was doing regeneration a little bit .. that 2x a week .. I mostly drive around the city and the first few days I bought it all was ok (the owner of the car beat the open road every day)

after a couple of days I see idle at 1000kr, out of the exhaust smell concluded regeneration in progress, but dpf still stands at 90% on VAG DPF app. i turn off, the fans work ..

I came home and parked in the garage I did not have any place to dribe .. I give my wife idea to go tomorrow to the spa to Krapina to extricate the regeneration a little and we get ready, I go and the dpf light turns on .. stopped at the gas station, fill diesel to 100% it and we had to do something in the city before I went out that I was driving around town for about half an hour. I put my car down in front of a shop and in 20 minutes we go out and I turn it back to 750kr, all normal, the light goes off .. look on the vag dpf application and stands at 33%. seems to be regenerated in this 10 km drive .. but as we have saved from the spa and I, according to the instructions, at 5th to 2200 rpms I put the cruise control at 105 km per hour somewhere and I drive 40km in one piece tak and tak back and all 5 .. after that a couple of days again tours just by the city and yesterday again regeneration, up to 1000 revs and smoke, which I did not finish because I have no where to ride every 3rd day except to eork and home 20kms thru town .. I go home parked in the garage.

today I go to work and halfway through regeneration started again and i get to work and turn engine off. so it will repeat the attempt of regeneration until the light goes on then he starts working actively and suffers the oil in the cylinders until it burns soot .. this is really the pressure on mind .. the frend has hyundai and 30, 2012 1.6 with 110ks, 170000km and nothing like that he does not happen .. his fellow has megane 3 1.5 dci 2013. 150000km, also not known for regeneration, unknown term .. nothing ... so what are the only problems with dpf? endless story?

I do not know how to clean this dpf or to take it out, we do not have to drive like this, so it's sucks ..

In none of your posts have you said how many miles your car has done. And you have oil ash turned off on vag dpf so we can't see that either. If your car wants to regen every 100km I would guess your dpf is full of ash and needs cleaning or a new one. How many miles/Kms has your car done?

Sure. In kilometers 188000 km in miles i think about 117000 miles.

In app some functions are n/a because app is in development and my engine is not yet supprted fully.. (CFHF)

Last regen was yesterday after 200 kms. Users in my country says after latest skoda ecu update in services in february 2017. shorted intervals between regens in half kilometers. Till than it  was 400-500 kms..

After that distance I would think your dpf is pretty full of oil ash. As the dpf gets full of stuff it can't burn off there is less room for soot it can burn off, so intervals get shorter, possibly nothing to do with ECU update.

I scanned it and find in vcds ash oil about 0.07L litres.. it is about 100ml +/-. I dont know which volume is dpf but read somewhere that 0.7L is end of dpf. 0.07 shoud be still good enough. What you think?

0.07l is very low for 188000 km or 117000 miles.

As for the maximum, I'm not sure where you found 0.7l from but the only figure I've seen suggested is 0.175l but plenty have reported higher oil ash volumes without issues.

@langers2k

maybe i read wrong value hh.

i have vcds cable and newer version on laptop, how to check ash oil volume again..

looked at youtube clips but none of them not understand. must go to:

select

engine

measuring blocks

than type some code, which one,  108, or 241, or some else?

help!

engine must running or can be only key in start position?

@langers2k

i did a fresh scan with vcds, but now i see i have cheap clone, friend of mine gave it to me for free.. he sold VAG car and not need vcds any more.. one like this..

https://www.ebay.com/itm/VCDS-VAG-COM-USB-ODB2-Diagnostics-interface-for-VW-AUDI-SKODA-SEAT/183371343128?_trkparms=aid%3D888007%26algo%3DDISC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D53210%26meid%3D4a635f7aea454320bcdbc00cb7f8bce8%26pid%3D100009%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D181875340325%26itm%3D183371343128&_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982

readings may be incorrect..but he told me worked perfectly on his golf 6 TDI 2011, 140ps.

i scanned it 2 weeks ago and few errors..

now i scanned it and ash volume is 0,16 .. so there is some little life in my DPF..?

not idea what that up means.. two weeks ago i had one pollution warning and yellow exhaust lamp on display on MFD and i understand it was because of few intermitted-unfinished regenerations, so i drive and and drive and finally active regeneration was sucessful.. (no experience with dpf at all-- my first) but now i know not to stop regeneration !

last weekend also i had one sucessful active regeneration monitored on VAG DPF app on android phone. soot mass came 25 and i was driving open road 15 minutes in 2200 rpms and it drops to 5.

sucessful interrupted regeneration.. :)

now i am on 19 mg soot and in tuesday i go to trip on highway some 500kms to do real passive regeneration and possibly that EGR parialy unblocking.. can i use some spray to put in main airflow? i see that somewhere.. how to drive to force egr valve be open mostly? also on 2200 revs  like on DPF regen or higher? i have no experience and it will be my first longer trip with my yety.

i can clean EGR manually, but it is very hard to do it on yety.. expecially on 4x4 there is no much place to operate, i see some pics and videos..

maybe egr is not that blocked because i have readings that it works in real time, scanned it i idle and on 2000 revs it opens normally..

and this error, is it because fake VCDS? cant say..

2 weeks after this sensor still have issue -270 celsius, but after a driving a motorway, apx 90m/p/h for 250 miles, after rescan with vcds,  no more warning of insufficient egr flow..

but my dpf regenerates once in 120 miles.. on open road maybe 300 miles.. it is at the EOL i perhaps..??

it is extremely expensive part (in local skoda store-service about 3000$... yeah 3 thousand dollars, they are insane!?!)

i searcher and find a particulare filter, new one, about 900 $..    what to do? is it worthly?

You've had the emissions fix right? Then it's normal for a regen every 150 miles. Post a full unedited autoscan to be sure...

If a sensor is reading -270'C, it probably isn't fitted or needed on your vehicle. For example there are 4 exhaust temperatures on my CFHC but only 3 show any data.

If you're not getting warning lights or error codes for the DPF, just leave it alone and let it do it's thing. If it had issues you'd know about it...

insane temperature sensor means it even not exist.. it is logically.

So it is not unusual for cars with EA198 tdi engine with emissions fix. I dont like that fix.. friend of mine dont have it and regens are twice less frequent. maybe i will go to autotuners to flash original ecu software from 2012. when car was made . Will decide later. Cause i think more frequent regens maybe shortens dpf life..

How about cleaning dpf, removing from car and clean with propriate equipment? Maybe i can extend life of dpf.. somewhere i read that after chemical and water high pressure cleaning, dpf acts like new one.. other people said it was waste of money. It probably depends with which method and how it is cleaned..

Also i have strange clicking from high pressure pump. Not in idle. Only on 1500 revs and higher. Pump gave no errors. Fuel pressure is good. Car drive well, Will record audio or video and post somewhere on hp pumps dedicated thread.. i see other bosch pumps on vag vr engines clicking same, maybe it is bad roller on piston that is below little crank of hp pump..

Maybe i can try some "do it yourself" cleaner applyed thru pressure sensor hole in front of dpf.

Heres dpf cleaning process video i find. If dpf is badly clogged, it cannot be cleaned, but if not, can be.. see:

and here is scan, some dpf-egr readings and some error connected to single wire can bus i dont know if maybe connected with that VCDS clone from amazon i have..

Correct, it's not unusual for more regens to occur after having the fix. Extra soot production is a side effect of lower NOx. Restoring the ECU software to a pre-fix version should restore the original behaviour.

I doubt any 'spray on' cleaner or fuel additive will make a significant difference to the DPF ash level. If you want it cleaned, it needs taking off and taking to a specialist company to refurbish it properly.

There is probably a wiring fault on one of your CAN-buses.

is it something i must worry about?

i find some fixed wires connecting drivers door and chasis in that rubber tunnel, porbably wires were broken somebody fix them.. and isolate with electrical tape.

but speakers works, central locking also, mirrors moving, only i dont know mirror heating is work or not, will see in winter time.. is it automatic or some switch to heat side mirrors?

i never had car with equiped with features like this.. mostly had only basic stuff in car..

Mirror heating is operated by the mirror switch. Look for the icon on the opposite side of the switch to the L & R markings.

Well, I'd worry about any wiring fault. If the other wire fails you'll start loosing functionality :/

i will take a look carefully at that wires for weekend.. thanks..
