code scanner help needed please

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I have a little bit of a problem with my 07 1.9 tdi  estate.

It keeps juddering every now and then for no reason sometimes it will just have no power till I turn it of and back on.

The engine light has also come on and of. Not always when this is happening.

On my way home tonight it cut out 3 time and the 3rd time I couldn't start it so had to jump it backwards down the hill I was stuck on.

Is there anyone in my local area halifax queensbury bradford  that could scan my car for me or if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be great.

My thoughts are it could be a blocked egr value split pipe sticky turbo vanes or blocked fuel filter but not being very mechanically  minded these are just ideas.

Thanks simon

Well managed to get it scanned and it has come up with the throttle body.

Had a look yesterday and it is sticking open.

Not sure if it's just gunge up broken or even the fuse so going to have a go at a quick clean check the fuse and if that doesn't work then will be looking at a replacement throttle body. Very nice just before Xmas lol

Right I took of the throttle body today and gave it a good clean but to be honest it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Any how after a good clean I fitted it back on the car and gave it a try and it still in the open position with the ignition on or off but I can move the valve with my finger to close it.

Would you say this is because it is fubar or could there be another problem like a sensor.

Thanks for any advise.

There is no throttle body as such on your engine. The part you're talking about is the anti shudder valve which is open all the time, and closes when you turn the ignition off so that it stalls the engine and makes for a nice sharp shut off (hence the name). If you ever get your car scanned you should get the actual code generated and stored, that way there is a better chance of proper diagnosis rather than a generic code reader throwing up a fault with a component which doesn't even exist.

Don't suppose you got the fault code did you?

  • Author

No I didn't but from memory he said it was something like an over boost and ground fault which he said was caused by a the anti shudder valve.

The valve doesn't close at all when the car is turned of and when I turn the car of I get a thud sound.

It only closes for a short period, and doesn't stay closed for very long. However, an overboost fault code wouldn't usually be thrown by anti shudder valve I don't think. Maybe the EGR valve? Sorry, I'm not really sure which set up your engine will have on it as I've been off the 1.9 engine for about 9 years now and I've been running the 2.0ltr which is different.

It's probably the EGR valve. A good old clean up of this can cure a lot of things. [emoji106]

I did give the egr valve a clean at the same time but didn't take it of so probably not a very good one.

Any thoughts on it been the anti shudder valve solenoid

Strange as I my sound but from Monday till Friday my car has been playing up with what I have said sunden jolts of power lose cuts out when on tick over or just coming up to lights or junctions limp mode and now the last 2 days it has run like a dream not even a hick up. All I have done is cleaned the anti shudder valve and a bit of the erg valve. The anti shudder valve still doesn't work so I not sure why all of a sudden it hasn't had any problems.

Managed to find out what the scanner came up with.

Intake manifold flap motor short to ground

Over boost pressure higher than regulation.

So dose this actually mean the anti shudder valve is fubar or was i told a load of s..t.

Well, that makes a little more sense. The intake manifold flap motor is the anti shudder valve assembly by a different name. I've had a quick scan in Etka and it appears to be the same part as fitted to the 2.0ltr TDI engines, and is a common failure. Part number 038 128 063 L.

The function is to close (as said before) when you turn the engine off which stalls the engine. It also has a secondary function which is to part close when the EGR function is called for. This part closure causes a vacuum through the EGR valve and assists in drawing the exhaust gas into the intake. If the EGR function is called for without the manifold flap causing a vacuum, it can cause running issues perhaps. It can also blow a fuse (at least on the 2.0ltr engine) which is common with the air con unit, so if you have no air con function then check the fuses accordingly. The part is available for about £150 - £180 online, and is fairly easy to diy fit.

Cheers Thanks.

Well just fitted the new to me part.

Couldn't afford a new one just yet and no drama's.

Engine management light has gone of but still shuts down with a bit of a thud.

I read on here that it will self adjust over a few good runs.

Just let's hope that the thud will go as well.

Did you check the fuses? The engine management light might be off as a result of the new motor not being faulty, but if there's a fuse blown the new motor will still not be working.

I checked all the fuses under the bonnet and to the right hand side of the drivers side and all are ok.

So do you think there is still an underlying problem.

Hard to tell without a code scan again really.

  • Author

Will see if I can get the same lad to give it a scan again

  • Author

Very strange. As I said earlier the car engine management light went out when I replaced the anti shudder valve.

Now it has come back on.

Let's see what the trip to work in the morning brings.

Just an idea but I have just read about a n239 manifold flap valve.

Could this be it and if so can anyone point me in the right direction.

Had a quick look but nothing stands out.

I know my knowledge on cars is a bit poor but I'm willing to learn and you have to start somewhere.

Thanks simon

Not relevant to you at all mate. The previous versions of the TDI engine had a vacuum controlled anti shudder valve, and this was controlled by a vacuum switching solenoid (labelled as the N239) valve. Yours is an electromechanical valve, so you don't have an N239.

I see thanks.

Back to the drawing board. Lol

Right got the lad to scan it again and came back with a p3101 code. Now do you think I have got a dodgy part or could this mean a break in the wire somewhere.

Most likely I would think it's a fuse mate. When the motors fail they invariably short out and blow a fuse. Replacing the part solves the initial fault and then leaves you with a further fault from the blown fuse.

I'm sorry I can't point you to which fuse it is for your particular model, but if you take a look at this thread there's some detail as to which fuse it is in an Audi. Mine was the same in a VW.

Thanks for the link but I've already read that and I checked the fuse which was f8 and it hasn't blown.

Well up date so far.

Popped back where I got the anti shudder valve from and we tried several more to no joy.

Changed the accelerator pedal and no joy.

Scanned if again and came up with the same shudder valve.

Then he said it could be a problem with another part before egr but not had any black smoke.

Then he mentioned something which I have forgotten the name of.

The egr valve pipe connects to the top and another pipe which connects to the turbo under it.

The is a small black bulb the uses air to move a flap.

Any thoughts on that it could be this.

Thanks simon

Take a picture of the parts and post it up here, then we'll have a better idea what you're talking about mate.
