  • Of course if you get an Mx-5 there's a lot of extra expense.           college courses in cutting, perming and colouring for a start   not to mention buying your own scissors, clippers...

  • My mates just bought a Nissan Skyline r32 gtst for a little more than your budget. RWD. 320bhp (updated turbo) 2,5 litre. Surprisingly good condition too for the age of it. Running costs wont be

  • Was looking at them if i was gonna go for one it would be the mk1 with the pop-up's because pop-up's don't need explaining

Agreed.

It's the only French car I'd have though.

old taxi with a tasty engine in it they are rear wheel drive :D

my dad has two of the bloody things both tx-1's with the nissan engines one is on 680k on it's original and the other is close to 300k interesting to drive though lol

Then put the engine in your fabia :p

That idea has been thought about ;) shame they never did a mk1 estate VRS

Clio 172/182

200 SX (hard to find a good one)

Civic Type R

Leon Cupra R (might be higher miles/rough one at sub £3k though)

Octavia VRS mk1

Mk2 MR2 (rev3+)

Celica 190

MX-5

VW Corrado

I wouldn't fancy the running costs of some of the other cars you listed (though the 200SX in my list above wouldn't be cheap to run either). I like the look of FTOs but finding a good manual one could take a while and the Clio/Civic would probably be a better option anyway.

The Clio is perfect for getting into trackdays and aside from cambelt changes they are pretty cheap to run - parts are generally cheaper than on German and Japanese cars.

Good list there yeah i'd love an FTO but it would have to be manual 100%. Always loved them from the original gran turismo i had the white GP VERSION-R and funny enough i'm typing this from an FTO seat that is my gaming chair haha  :p

306 GTI or Rallye is quite appealing too. Although I know someone that's owned both and the electrics have failed epically as per usual with most things French.

Quite amusing when the car horn starts to die though, just ends up sounding like a toy with its batteries going flat.

Definitely, the mk1 looks more like a proper sports car. My friend reckons they ruined the mk2 with power steering as well.

Yeah the quality of some of the parts isn't the best but they are cheap to fix. I bought 4 brand new genuine shocks for mine for about £150. Front discs are £40 a pair, tyres are cheap especially in 195/50/15 which is what I use on track.

I like to think of its French quirks as adding character!

Ah the original Gran Turismo - I've always dreamed of Skylines, Supras and NSXs!

My cousin's saxo's horn has done exactly that. I just admitted i know someone with a saxo

Never knew the mk-1's never had PAS mind you my fabia has decided to be 50/50 whether it does have PAS or not  :giggle:  And yeah the mk2 mx5 is no where near as nice to look at

my coat...door...

I paid £2300 for my Pulsar which is not far off 300bhp with 4 wd in a chassis that weighs 1250 kg and it'll do 0-60 in little over 5 seconds. I had it at 130 when I was bringing the car home and I reckon I could've had 150 out of it the clocks go upto 180 which is quite cool.

They are very fun cars with a solid 2 litre tubo engine that is very tunable imo it'll be hard to beat the performance at that price.

How about a BMW 330i it has all you want over 200bhp and RWD.

Plenty around in your price range and usually not bad on insurance.

Clio would be fun, especially if you plan to jump on some track days.

I'm looking to buy a 172/182 for track :)

Do you value reliability? :P

Something a little Left of field?

MGF or MG TF? Not as quick as some of the other cars, but the likes of the MG TF 160 are really nippy cars. Very similar to the MX-5, just with a slightly differing driving position. You can usually get them for a fair bit cheaper then 3k as well.Their only big issue is with the Head Gaskets. Although most for sale now have already had those sorted.

They're also RWD so it ticks that box, and have loads of room for upgrades if that's your kind of thing. Some people have made some cracking examples.

Corrosion is the main problem with them isnt it?

No more than anyother car. They mainly go on the rear arch but the problem was the cars imported from Japan never had undersill, most were done once they were in the country unless you have a uk model but only 73 of those were registered in the uk.

Doesn't mean someone hasn't made one though. ;)

On another note I used to have a 200sx S14 and it was a great car, very quick or it seemed so at the time.

Seen that and i love it but sadly i don't have the space to do something like that or the knowledge ;)

Have considered the 330 i do the them but would have to be the 330ci good choice there

Do hold a soft spot for those but trying to find a fairly standard car will be a challenge don't really want a messed about with one until i decide to go mental with it :)

They are left but never really been keen on them would prefer the mr2 t-bar if i was to go mid engine RWD besides i'd have to join the MG owners club lol

There is a guy called Bob who owns the gtir Motorsport forum and a pulsar breakers shop called gti-r-us, he has been taking modified pulsar and turning them back to stock, he would be a very good contact for a standard R.

There is a reason he is doing that. He has it on good authority that the land of yanks will opening their borders to pulsars in the near future meaning that prices will start to rise to a point that much better reflects the caperbility of the cars. In Australia they go for stupid money in the right condition.

Grandad hat on.

With most of the cars you mentioned you'll still be paying a huge insurance premium for the privilige, even at the grand old age of 22

Clio Cups ,  and MX5's would be a good step up for you and fun on a track.  Just because a car has large power doesn't mean it's fun to drive.   You don't  want to end up with a big bruiser that's costly to maintain and find you can't drive it often and do some trackdays.

Ok, Grandads hat of now

Yeah the clio seems to be getting good reviews most of the bigger cars are reasonable to insure like last year i checked what a c4 corvette would be and it was £800 fully comp with 2yr no claims but i sadly can't afford a corvette but i do see where your coming from *leaning towards the clio now*

It is well worth investing in some lessons at Knockhill then see what you really fancy buying if you are going to do Track Days with it.

http://knockhill.com

Or cheaper is check our some of the clubs that do Sprints & Hillclimbs, it is cheaper

& you might find an interesting car for sale.

It is shame you do not like Fords, because your budget suits getting one.

My old man has 6 cars (inc 2 taxi's) His mondeo 2.0 tdci was fast enough with 130ps but he's old now so think he'd rather comfort. He also can't work out why his son is asking for 200bhp cars when apparently my 68bhp fabia is fast enough  :D
