Has everyone fitted helicopter tape behind their front mudflaps to stop them rubbing the paint away and getting rust?

The only car I ever had with mudflaps was a carlton I bought second hand and it had them fitted. They all gradually came off on their own. Well with a little help from my reversing up to a kerb which pinched them between the tyres and ripped them off. The fronts stayed with me for a year or two until I noticed that one day , there they were , gone
