New job, new car if I choose...

Featured Replies

So, I've just got a new job at work and will now be community based so I am entitled to a lease car if I want one.

I absolutely love my vrs and really don't want to get rid but obviously I'll be doing a fair few miles over the year and don't want it affecting my personal car. They will pay me mileage if I use own car but still...

I can have any car that I want but have to pay a percentage towards it, they will pay the rest. If I do get a lease car, I get insurance, tyres, tax etc included plus they'll give me money per miles.

I've still got 4 years left on my HP so don't know where I really stand with getting rid? I think I could sell it privately and would just have to pay off the remaining finance? (I owe more than I could sell it for though)

Number one choice would be mk3 Octy VRS , going more towards the Hatch rather than the Estate. Think the boot space is actually now bigger than my fab estate? Has anyone driven the new Tdi? Would prefer petrol but mpg would prob be stupid. Think if I went for the diesel, I would miss the power of my fab vrs

Just don't know what to do!

Don't they have a fuel card?

Nah it's a bit pants. I would have to choose how many personal miles a year on the lease. They would only pay for my business miles and I have to submit them every month to get the money back the following month.

Sounds a bit like our scheme - do you have a government/civil service employer?

If you call your HP company you can request a settlement figure - if you can sell teh vRS for similar it is worth thinking about.

I went on to our lease deal 15 months ago and think its great.  I pay £160/month for private use but get a fully maintained, top spec car that is replaced every 3 years. Couldnt do that on a private lease.

Because I pay monthly for private use I am not taxed on that elelment

see if you can clear your old car first, then get a company one, no point keeping your old one really?

Can you just choose any lease car tho, or does it have to be from a restricted list?

Hi mate. Yup, Government. 160 a month, You can't argue with that can you, for stress free motoring :-). I'll give my finance company a bell tomorrow and ask for a settlement figure.

if its like our CAPES scheme you can chose any car - obviously the personal payment varies accordingly

Ferby. No restriction on cars. I could choose whatever model and spec. You just have to send off a request for the model and spec you want and they get back to you with a figure.

Pretty sweet isn't it :-). My vrs costs me about 250 a month including my insurance, so wouldn't want to go higher than 250 in payments for lease car. Don't know what I could get for that kind of money.

But I've heard that you pay more in income tax if you have a lease, I really need to weigh it all up.

Sorry Furby, just realised that I spelt your name wrong in the previous post! Sorry mate

Shame the dirt-cheap Golf R lease deals have ended as that would be a great upgrade! I think there are still some reasonable deals out there on those tho.

Take the mileage allowance, drove the car you have and clearly enjoy. Put the profit aside for when you want to replace it?

Second that idea.

A couple of friends later found moving on a bit more expensive than they would have liked to get on the car owning ladder again.  At least at the level of their late company car.

if you are paying up front for private use you will not be taxed on that too.

The tax is designed for those that have a company car and dont pay any private element..

Dose the 250 you are paying for your current car include maintenance/tyres/ road rescue etc - I would doubt it

Ah ok cool. Yea personal use too so that's good to know. And my car doesn't include maintenance so at times, will be more than 250 a month I guess!

Was an absolutely incredible deal wasn't it. They're stunning the new R's. Would love to own one but don't think the wife to be would be too impressed :-P

Isnt fuel economy quite important though?

Any idea how many miles youll be doing?

Maybe a GTD would make more sense?

Yea mate, couldn't afford to run an R really unfortunately, plus I need an estate or very big Hatch/saloon. Think my partner is getting the new GTD come March when she can upgrade. Lovely the GTD's. Cracking performance too from what I've seen!

Mileage will vary I think. Will prob be looking at between 500/1000 miles a month I think.

1000 miles a month is only 12,000 a year. Thats not many at all?

That would be just my business miles plus my personal miles on top which is usually around 8/10k a year, so could be hitting 20k a year.

Ah right. Okay.

Defo diesel territory then.

I guess deciding what the budget is would be a good starting point?

Hmm. Bmw 330d?

Love the new 3 series estates! That 330D engine seems immense from what I've seen on the net. Lovely sound too. I did look on the bmw website and apparently the 330D starts at 37k for basic model ouch...Haha
