Which Brake Pads?

Featured Replies

Which of the various pads would be recommended for use with Group N disks and standard calipers for fast road and occasional track events?

Do you get what you pay for like most things in life?

1/. Ferodo: DS 2500

2/. Pagid: Fast Road

3/. EBC: Reds on front, Greens on rear

Any others worth looking at?

Chris

of the ones you have mentioned then Ferodo ds2500 is probably the only one that would cope with reasonable track use (dependant on vehicle and driving style)...............

however, something like one of the competition Pagid compounds may offer you a better bet!! these are also very "streetable" in most applications.........

stockcar, can you supply feroddo ds2500s for the fabia?

(sorry to hijack the thread!)

yes, would not be a problem..........although as mentioned on another thread i do not stock any pads for these applications at this precise moment!! (it would appear that i will probs have to though.........)

i have a very good relationship with Ferodo (as with the other brake manufacturers we deal with) and can normally get any "special" order pad nect day, so you will experience only minimal delay!!

Stockcar,

The Pagid competition RS4.2 "blue" entry level competition material look like the next up from DS 2500s. I'll PM you for quote.

Chris

I may be asking the impossible.......but here goes :D

Is there a pad available(other than EBC) which has better braking & LESS brake dust ??? -- not too bothered about life span -0- am more than capable of replacing them myself -- would be nice to improve the stopping and reduce the cleaning :D

Re pads I have tried EBC products on my previous Subaru & wouldnt touch them again with the preverbial barge pole, I felt it was a case of "nice adverts but !!!!!"

Curently running Ferrodo DS2500 on the Skoda & I am very pleased with the result, OK its combined with bigger discs so it should be good but they are very consistent & not excessivly dusty.

Re dust I find keeping the wheels well waxed (with SWISSOL wax) means they are a doddle to clean & if you want to clen them between car washes a quick wipe over with an old towel or similar is all thats needed. The alternative is get your wheelks colour coded brake dust (anthracite) as Jon did

I've just discarded a set of EBC pads...

And put Pagid fast road on with the new

standard disks I got under warranty...

Just bedded them in..

But no fade after 5 x 80 mph to 10 mph repeated stops, these

were to bed the disks and pads in... no problems,, smelt a bit thou...

not really the way to bed "fast road" spec pads and new discs, you could seriously shorten the life span of your discs in this way!!

ideally light to medium use for 150miles and then a gradual build up over the next 50miles to full use.............

"fast road" pads are exactly that and should be treat as std for the purpose of bedding unlike the "rs" range of competition pads........

I now have some prices for a Group Buy (minimum 3) of

1/. Ferodo DS 2500s or

2/. Pagids RS4.2 Blues

3/. Group N disks

If anyone is interested could they please send me a PM.

Chris

Bedding in my brakes... sorry forgot to add,, I did about 160ish light use miles before starting this bedding in brakes procedure.

The procedure was gotten off a USA brake disk/pad manufacturer,

and also from various people on here.... and the bedding in stops were done

on an increasing padel application for each stop.

Then gently accelerating back up and brake again slightly harder.

to about 10mph.. do this 5 times and then allow the brakes to cool off to ambient before using them again . the disk should have then turned a uniform blueish colour,, which would indicate

good heatsoak in the disk...

I did quite a lot of reading before my new brakes were put in...

the problem is that these bedding in procedures are based on competition materials, and therefore do not really apply to a std type set-up - there is an awful lot of mis-information going on by people (incl. some "specialists") who either don't know or should know better!!!!.............good to see that you had done some miles beforehand so probs okay

if you need any specific advice in the future feel free to ask................

when my vrs is due for a service and has its pads changed do i have to pay for that or is it included in the warranty. as the items are perishable i take it i have 2 shell out for them.

if that is the case, would my skoda dealer fit these ferrodo pads if i supplied them?

Anything on the car which can be replaced due to normal wear and tear such brake pads, wipers blade, windscreen wash, tyres, oil etc has to be paid for by you.

Parts which fail within a reasonable amount of mileage or time may be replaceable under warranty.

This is not gospel just my take on matters. If in doubt our friendly customer service rep (;) ) Niki can clarify (I assume).

Your garage will be able to fit your pads for you but non standard part may invalidate all or part of your warranty.

Why not change them yourself...they're a doddle....and your garage wouldn't be able to tell...unless they take them out or they're some lurid colour.

Chris, others you may want to try are the Mintex ones; 1155, 1166 or 1153.

Alyn, any part numbers for these? Just curious as after this weekend's Ring trip, I've heard that the Pagid blues and above are quite tough on discs.

E1678 (front) & E1158 (rear).......be quite suprised at your comments as, compared to their competition, the Pagid materials are among the most "disc friendly" compounds available.............

The Mintex part nos are the same as the Pagid ones? Are they the same company or is that a typo?

TMD friction owns both company's but run totally independantly at the mo'............think its just a strange occurrence for the no's to be the same........

Wierd!

So, next question, how do all these compounds compare?

I'm assuming that its:

Pagid Blue

1153

DS2500

1155

Orange

Black

1166

DS3000

Grey

In ascending order of harshness. Any idea where I could get the temp ratings and Mu figures for the various pads from? The list I've got with those figures and their suitability to various applications is a little out of date and doesn't include half of those listed.

As to the Pagid harshness to discs, I'm basing that on hearsay as I haven't actually tried them yet. Its based on the experiences of others who've run them, admitedly on APs (Scoobs) and Brembos (Evos), rather than the group Ns that I run.

Anyone else here run Performance Friction Carbon Metallic pads?

01 and 97 compounds?

I have run these on my Brembos.

Good pad life and not too bad on disks. (wear wise)

Lasted 4 times longer than stock Galfer ones and work equally as well from cold, with warm up in a couple of seconds to a whole new performance level.

regards

bill

I know a couple of people who run them in AP 4 pots. Seem very dusty, squeal a bit but seem to stop pretty well.
