How do i stiffen the front end of the suspension?

Featured Replies

Hi, i was wondering if an anti role bar or Strut brace would help stiffen the ride and improve it? My car sways left to right when cornering, depending on left or right corner. If the above don't help is there anything else that would?

+1 for ARB's, I had front and rear Whiteline adjustables fitted and they transformed the car :)

Changing your spring rates will help more than ARB's.

Spring rates just adjust how much the ARB affects roll. Upgrading ARB will give a better balance as well as roll adjustment.

Plus the ride will be firmer and on UK roads thats not a good thing..... go with ARB's

I would also consider an anti lift kit, since it really helps if you feel the car is pushing too hard in corners. Had a Seat Leon Cupra and I can say it really transformed the car, no more overstreer and you could hit the curve much harder :)

As said above go with arbs to flatten out cornering and improve grip but not at the expense of comfort. Nice to dial out a bit of understeer as well which is better done with arbs than spring rate. I've had a whiteline on the back, still got standard arb on the front but with upper and lower brace. Rarb on middle setting with standard front feels just about spot on with the balance to me, car drives so much nicer, stiffer but actually more comfortable because the back isn't pitching and dipping around. Still on standard shocks and springs too.

The suspension towers are right next to the bulkhead and integrated into the structure pretty rigidly.  A brace maybe helped on older models where the towers were remote and not so well supported but pretty well redundant on an Octavia 2 for road use.

AS far as handling goes, a RARB will make a big difference.  I used a Whiteline, but they are only a transverse spring when all is said and done - not rocket science.

I only fitted the rear as I felt it was the balance f/r which was wrong.  Not felt the need to change yet.

I also have the superpro ALK bushes.  Can't say they made a lot of difference.  Nothing like as much as having a really good alignment done.  On the UK's roads it something that needs doing at least every tyre change or even every year.

Better tyres and reducing unsprung weight will probably make more difference too.  Next time I will likely go with the S3/TT console bush.

I would start by looking at the shocks first unless you know they are in perfect order.
