Air con compressor failure!

Featured Replies

Cars been in to Skoda as my ac hasn't worked for about a year (finally got round to getting it looked at),

Dreaded call and conformation my compressor has failed, I told the chap it's a common problem and he said that it's not that common???

Hhmmmm

Waiting on a quote to do the work, parts are 500-600 plus labour??

Not a happy bunny, if it's a common fault surely they should be offering some kind of good will gesture?

When i bought mine earlier this year it had failed, main reason the garage would t budge on price as it cost them 600 to sort before sale.

Did you ask for good will? How old is your car? Do you have full dealer service history?

Full Skoda service history, March 2010 car

Haven't been back to them yet, going in the morning...

We will see what they say

Ask for factory good will definitely.

Quoted £750 ish for replacement of my ac compressor!!!!

Moaned about the common fault and was told to ring Skoda uk which I did, my complaint is being investigated and will know in the next few days the outcome.

Lady on the phone said as I'd had all the service work ect done at my local Skoda dealer they will prob do something.

So fingers crossed

Compressors are a weak point on Mk5/6 Golfs, Octavias use the same hardware of course.

I had a 2009 Mk6 Golf GT 140 TDI as a company car a while back and its compressor died during the height of summer just weeks before its 3rd birthday. I understand it was over 1k of work to put right as my compressor had imploded, threw a load of swarf into the system so needed a new receiver/dryer too.

Would have been ****ed had it been my own car.

Turned out mine was knackered when I got the car, but it was bloody cold so I didn't notice until the spring. New compressor and condensor (radiator which has the drier built in) fitted under warranty, fortunately.

Dealer service history is a major plus if you want goodwill.

Shame you didnt take it in a year ago when it failed,it may have still been covered by the 3 year warranty.  :p i must be on borrowed time with mine, its 6 years old & still working ok *touch wood*  :D

Had mine replaced last year,£550 inc labour,my biggest ever bill from a garage :(

Update on my AC.

Garage diagnosed fault as loose bolt on denso condenser unit! There is a technical Builtn out for this as its a common fault.

Skoda uk have been informed and I'm waiting for a response back.

My local garage have said they will probably cover a good percentage of the cost but not all of it.

Sounds promising but surely if there's a technical bulitin out and common fault on these then they should cover the full cost?

Just for info.

I had a compressor fail just before a summer holiday, so no time for faffing.

Local indy offered a secondhand unit or an ebay (Standen) one.  I took the s/h one as it would be done quicker.  It was also slightly cheaper but that wasn't the decider.

Either option was about 1/2 main dealer quote.

Thanks, to be honest I've give Skoda some grief over this so will be supprised if they don't cover the full cost, especially as the car will be having a major service, mot, brake fluid change, cam belt, water pump and possible discs and pads all round at the same time!

And yes I will have a heart attack at the cost of all this lol.

I may be wrong on this, but I think you are overdue your cambelt change by nearly a year. I have a July 2010 2.0TDi and the recommended change for that is 4 years and so many miles. Skoda UK confirmed only vehicles registered after September 2010 were on the 5 year replacement.

Only reason I'm raising this if they are already doing work on the car might save time.

Yes I'm aware of this, thanks though.

Cam belt is being replaced when it goes in for the a/c work.

I had my compressor relaced at 3.5 years old and 42,000 miles. Luckily it was covered by warranty.  Having bought the car last January, I didn't notice the lack of air-con until I needed it in July!  Needless to say I have taken up the offer of another year of Skoda warranty.  £399 for the year but it doesn't take much to fail to get up to that amount on labour alone.

UPDATE:

Just had a call from Skoda U.K.

They are covering 100% of the bill.

I'm More than happy with that.

That's really cool !

What needs doing in the end?

Does the loose bolt simply need tightening up or has the loose bolt resulted in a broken compressor?

Looks like Skoda UK are doing the right thing here although it was sound advice earlier when a previous poster recommended getting the car booked in whilst still under warranty, or at least when the car was closer to it's third birthday.

Another good reason why we need a thread dedicated to list all of Skoda's service campaigns, good ammunition when pushing for out-of-warranty goodwill gestures.

If you try doing it up it usually shears off. Very common on certain suppliers compressor's. What a lot of people do not realise is your ac compressor is never off when the engine is running. It's always running but only at 2% duty cycled when off.

Whole compressor replacement required.

From March 2011 they changed the compressor to a different brand.

They will replace compressor and service the ac system.

My local dealer have bent over backwards to help me to be fair and Skoda uk have also been excellent.

Can not fault there customer service

Happy days, that's pretty good.

Makes me wish I'd gone to Skoda when mine needed doing - my car was registered March 2007 and I bought it with FSSH in September 2011 - it was outside warranty, but makes me think I may have had some goodwill from them.

In the end I had a Sanden one fitted (who apparently make OE equipment) for £460 fitted by an indy, but I've always wondered if I should have asked first.

Should of, never mind.

The unit they are fitting to mine that replaces the faulty one is a sanden.

Was quoted £680-750

I also had a compressor failure middle of last year, something about a bolt backing off resulting in lunching the whole thing. I was a few months out of warranty but luckily Skoda paid for the parts and half the labour
