MPG

Featured Replies

Hi all, just wondering had my car 2 weeks now and brought it to commute to work. It's been averaging 40mpg on the motorway and from what I've heard it seems I should be getting more any advice would be good! Still happy with 40 though Haha

vRS? - On long journeys 25miles+ I achieved 60mpg and on short journeys I didn't see it drop below 55mpg. (The car was completely standard, serviced with genuine parts every 10k, run on Shell diesel only, tyres pressures maintained at 34psi, 32pis rear and wheel alignment maintained - MPG didn't drop over the 100k I put on it)

I am guessing you have a mk1 Vrs ? I have one to and I get about 33mpg local if I drive when my dad drives he gets about 21-24mpg don't ask !

I'm not sure what I get on the motor way does seem like mine drinks fuel but then again it has been mapped think it needs a better map not sure who used to own the car

Winter mpg is lower due to the additive they put in the diesel to stop it freezing

Everyone's will be different due to the difference in journeys, style of driving and mechanical condition of the car/engine.

There are a few things you check/try to improve the MPG:

-The tyres are at the correct pressure. Book figures for a normal load are 2.3bar (33-34psi) front and 2.2bar (31-32psi rear) some people like to run 34psi all round, it doesn't really matter so long as they aren't under inflated.

-Tracking/Alignment is correct, though you'd probably notice if it was out by a lot.
-Sticky break pads, can be checked by jacking up the car and rotating the wheels by hand. Rear ones can be bad for it and often just need a good clean up.
-Engine is well maintained. When was the last service, is the air filter element fairly clogged up etc.
-Run some FORTE diesel treatment through a tank of diesel and take the car for an old Italian tune up to blow the cobwebs out.

I consistently get 67 MPG across a tank of my PD100. That includes a 75% grill block and higher tyre pressures.

Car is quite sensitive to a heavy foot.
