Christmas Car Problems!

Featured Replies

So I went to the shop for some batteries and when I get back into my car to come home the steering was super heavy! Pulled round the corner turned it off hoping to start it back up and it was just a technical glitch. Then sadly it wouldn't start back up and I had to get the misses to come and get in while I pushed to bump it off.

Now its the first time I've had a belt snap so is it normal for PAS to go aswell when the belt does? It lit up like a xmas tree on the way home, ABS, Air Bag light, etc for a brief moment and went but the wheel with an ! Stays lit now.

This all normal?

I'm going to attempt to put a new aux belt on at the weekend is it advised to get timing belt done too? And is the aux an easy job? It doesn't look easy with the limited space lol.

Thanks ahead!

Fabias have electronic power steering so yes with the belt gone it's got no power to power up the steering

Have you got haynes manual

Wouldnt have thought timing belt needed replacing unless its due1 ofcourse then both would be a priority

And would certainly be easier to change both at the time. But from i can tell aux belt aint to bad to change

No Haynes.

Think I'll give the timing belt a miss till next month.

Thanks

my brother was borrowing my Ibiza when the aux belt failed, he said it was a bit fiddly to replace because of the space but not hard. the car was perfectly fine once it was replaced, no need to do or replace anything else

Is it something I can do on the drive with axle stands and a jack or will I have to try limp to my mates garage and put it on the lift?

Cheers

my brother did it at home from above. no axle stands, no dismantling. I believe the only tools he needed were to lever the tensioner. he says it was a pain in terms of space but that's it :)

Had my aux belt done yesterday as it was making a bit of a din. The belt was rather perished, glad I've got a new one!

If you have a hard pipe intercooler pipes then it's a pain to fit the new belt!

@jonowilliams

Have you searched through some of threads on this forum about aux belt change

Do you own the 1.9vrs?

I would say if you have the correct tools to undo the tensioner and a good set of ramps you could do it easy enough

I had to do this job on an old focus i simply got it on ramps chocked rear wheels and put it in gear(for safety)

Get a note pad and draw out the cogs and draw the belt so you can look back at your art work for ref lol

I found by dropping the belt down from top and gradually work it round each cog until complete it was tight but dooable make sure that belt is straight!

Goodluck

Get a trusty friend or even the missus if you tell what to do before hand. Jack front os up. Get underneath with the new belt ready. Get abover person to push tensioner (if its the missus push tensioner first then get her to hold it) then get them to unhoop top pf belt. You wprk bottom. Then pass new belt up the same gap and once they put it on. Put the bottom of the belt on

if done like that its a piece of cake and takes about 5mins of setup (taking off top boost pipe and jacking up) and about 20seconds to change the belt and nice and simple.

Once the old belt is off. Try and be swift in getting new belt on and plan one step ahead at this part.

Becuae if the tensioner slips without the belt on the job will become abit of a pain. Oh and dont put your pinky's where they can get trapped!

sounds like the battery's not too great either

not necessarily, mine was fine once charged and the belt replaced

All done I've a new small problem which I shall start a new thread for.

Thanks

Actually rather than a new thread ill see how this goes lol

So it's all working now had to bump it off and took it out for 10 miles to get some charge. But I noticed that when my steering is centred it's heavy to go left or right for a very small amount of turn then it's back to being light? But once its centred again I get the same.

Any hints?

Cheers

Take it for a proper drive, half an hour or more on fast roads. That will really charge your battery. Then see how it is.

Will it be battery voltage that's the problem?

Try what I've suggested and you'll find out.

Taking a car out for a ten minute drive after a flat battery incident is just not enough charging time.

If you have another means of charging the battery, use that, as it will be cheaper than just driving around.

Took it out for a 170 mile drive last night. Seems fine now thanks mate!
