Stub axles on rear beam.

Featured Replies

I've got a second hand vrs rear axle which I am overhauling whilst it's off the car.

I've noticed that there is an oil or lubricant of some description which is on the stub axle when I removed the hubs to have a look at the condition (of the stub axles).

Could somebody kindly help me out with what this is please? Or what would be suitable for this application?

Plan is to clean up, paint, re-bush and replace the hubs/bearings on this one and then swap it with mine. The brackets for the brake lines are a bit butchered on mine hence the reason for replacing it.

Thanks in advance!

any grease actually on the stub axles themselves must have come from the rear wheel bearings or applied during the fitting of rear bearings

Personally i would just apply a light film of oil or Lithium grease (very light film) just to aid the rear bearings on. but thats about it.

Someone else may have more to add but thats my two pence

Thanks mate, that has pretty much echoed the road I'd have gone down with no advise.

The hub came off the stub axle with no effort whatsoever , I wasn't expecting that at all?

high speed bearing grease which is a clear/yellowish colour...................& yes the hub bearing should come off easy .........make sure it isn't worn too much

Thanks chaps, there is some minor scoring on the stub axle but not play in the hub/bearing caused by excessive wear on the stub. Looks worth spending some dollar on to resurrect it.
