smf conversion question

Featured Replies

can someone here aid my research?

im looking for an SMF that is a direct replacement of the factory dmf. i.e. it uses the standard off the shelf clutch

trying to convert one over as cheap as possible due to dmf issues. but nothing i find clearly states whether it will work or not with the factory clutch

and to clarify, yes i am changing the clutch at the same time with it all being out, but was just going to refit a standard one. not looking for something to hold ridiculous power or anything, just for a standard car.

Don't do it.

A clutch plate designed for a solid flywheel is sprung to dampen the torsional vibrations.
A clutch plate designed for a DMF isn't anywhere near as sprung as it's designed to work with the DMF as that does most of the dampening.

Fitting an unsprung clutch to a solid flywheel in a diesel will be horrible.

Look at the difference between the two and it's obvious.

So, is there an uprated dmf?

A std sachs clutch plate is around 7.5mm thick where as the SMF plate is nearly 9mm thick so they are different sizes too.

Can't get uprated DMFs. You can still run high power with a DMF, but it will fail.

The smf is a fit and forget item

But with the trade off with additional noise and driveability depending on what kit you buy.

In the van it shakes like ****, not sure what it's like on the vrs

big power you need 1 no other way round it

I have read somewhere that a flywheel and clutch from a VR6 fits the diesels engine, this is a SMF

Why would you need anything uprated for standard power?

I know Joevrs has run a GTB1756 for a good couple of years now using his car daily and its still running a standard dmf and clutch, and Alexe3 is running a GTB2260, fitted couple of months ago again no probs yet on dmf and standard clutch :)

it was more of a curiosity question tbh, I was wondering if an smf could be fitted so that the issue never arises again. but wondered if there was one that could be used with the standard clutch. to keep everything easy to get hold of (and cheap!) in the future

your answer to the above is no then. As a SMF require a SMF Clutch plate and cover and these are specify to the brand of SMF setup you buy

best option is new SACH DMF and organic or 6 paddle clutch with new pd 150 cover plate this gives you nice soft pedal no rattling Flywheel and will handle 360ft-lb+

literally a fit a forget item for 50,000miles +

i've had a SACH DMF, Sach 6 paddle and uprated cover (heavier pedal) and its done 55,000 miles in various bhp 215/240/240+ and its still in perfect working order with very little wear on the paddle plates and cover

I changed to a SMF and had to change the clutch to a specific SMF one, it had different bolt sizes and all sorts. I changed back to a DMF and new clutch again because the vibrating on idle got on my nerves. Thinking of selling the SMF setup actually...
