Unidentified droning noise.

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

In the past few weeks my 2010 Yeti has developed a horrible droning noise. I've had it at the dealer (who charged me £50) and they said it was down to having "not very good tyres" on the front (they are Nokian WR D3 winter tyres which have won many group tests so are hardly crap). The garage said they swapped the backs for the fronts and the noise disappeared. This confused me somewhat because surely the noise would still be present, just coming from the opposite end of the car. At the moment I have 2 steel wheels with the winter tyre on them on the front and on the back I have alloy wheels with Michelin Primacy tyres on them. On the motorway the noise seems to be worst at 60mph and all but disappears when I go above that. I was out last night around town and could hear it at about 30mph however when I went round a sweeping left hand turn it disappeared only to appear again when I straightened up. I've got another 300mile drive up north in a couple of weeks and really want it fixed by then. Does anyone think that putting my winter tyres on the spare alloys will make a difference or does it sound like more of a mechanical issue? My dad says it sounds like a dry bearing, although the garage claim to have checked this too and disagree. Any help very much appreciated.

Thanks, out of interest where did you get your steel wheels?

Ahem why is this posted in the buying forum? :D

Is it? I do apologise. I'm new to these parts. I wanted to put it in a general skoda/mechanical section.

Well I moved to yeti area as thought was most suitable. Will check later when off my phone and back on proper pc.

Welcome.

1/ General advice from the experts is not to just fit 2 winter tyres, but to fit 4.

2/ Yes, just having different tyres on the front could indeed cause the noise. Try this:

Put all 4 of your original tyres back on.

Check noise.

Put the winter tyres back on the front.

Check noise.

And............find a better garage that understands winter tyres!

Yeah, that's my plan but it's blowing a gale and peeing down today.

My plan was to fit 4 but I couldn't stretch to that at the time.

I get this, but strangely, it's only when SWMBO is in the car

Do you think it could be because of the excessive weight on the front passenger seat?

This. Looks like the front left bearing is faulty.

You may find you develop a ringing in your left ear!

Does sound like the beginning of a wheel bearing going, though I would go and ask somewhere that does tyres if you're not sure the garage has had a proper look.
