Arrgghhhh! Drivers window won't go up

Featured Replies

So today I got back from shopping and had my window down a bit, went to switch it up and it decided to go down instead? When I'd first switched the window down while driving it did make a weird noise, almost a grinding sound, so I left it part open until I got home.

After fiddling it seems to go up until about 6" from the top, then it either starts going down by itself or it just sits there and won't go any further. It does make a nasty sound though.

Does anyone have any ideas what it might be? I know it ain't going to be cheap.

Could it be related to the window locks? The passenger and driver locks don't always open with the fob and I have to use the key and handle. I was told at the last service (March 2014) that it was probably the servo so, again, not a cheap job.

Man, the lock on the house front door broke two days ago, the optical unit on the headlights has come undone, and now this. I'm pi55ed off to say the least.

I've taped bin bags over the open window and the car's booked in at the garage on Tuesday anyway, but obviously this leaves 3 nights with an unsecured car. Is there a way to get the window up manually?

Thanks

Window regulator is screwed! What car is it on?

Common VAG issue over all cars

Feel for you Jigger.  My rear window went on the Del Sol a few weeks back.  I had to strip it down and wedge the glass up on bits of 2x2 and batten... a la..

as I was similarly concerned about security.

Hope you get it sorted.

Jesus! That looks bad. I was just saying to my wife over dinner what would we have done if it happened on holiday. Now I know

I've got breakdown insurance cover so I called them, but not covered because I'm not in danger and the car still drives. They did offer to send a recovery truck for £90. I asked where it would take the car? They didn't know but it would cost £1.50 per mile and £30 for overnight storage. Then what?, I asked. Then they take it to a garage tomorrow... Sunday. I asked what garage would be open on a Sunday? She didn't know so probably another £30 overnight storage. Madness!!!!

@ Big Jase: I suspect the regulator or motor, or the runners are knacked. During the freeze last week it seemed to be seized but eventually freed itself so I wonder if the strain knackered it? It's in the Skoda dealers on Tuesday because I haven't got time to take it the Indy. There goes the new dishwasher budget.

Yikes

New window regulator and inner door panel (£70 iirc)

Then possibly 2 hours labour knowing the robbing barstewards @ £70 and hour

Expect a bill of around £210 :o

Yikes

on my old octavia w reg the plastic regulator went on every window over the 8 years i had it . i cut two bits of wood one for front and back as gap was slightly different . had it happen driving to holiday destination . had to unpress the button for back electric windows so ciggie lighter would power all manner of nintendo's etc  . told kids do not play with window 3 hours from home . i hear the dreaded noise & immediately asked who pressed the window button deafening silence from both boys in the back asked again & again silnce as the window next to my oldest boy slid down ( guilty ) had to pull over on an a road empty half the boot get tools & said bit of wood remove door card fit bit of wood & drive on luck i kept the bitss of wood in the car . killed said oldest boy in all manner of ways as payment at my leisure . actually traded in the car with one of the windows held up with a bit of wood

to touch on another point made it always makes car look secure unlike the mass of tape giving away thats all thats holding the window up
