Engine management light

Featured Replies

Help!! Came on after 20 mile drive, back on after starting engine again to come home from work. No symptoms at all. Had a new cat and sump a couple of weeks ago. Anyone got any ideas about obvious things to check before expensive trip to Skoda please?

No symptoms at all means it's probably an EGR excessive flow fault, ignore it and it will go away or download VCDS Lite for free and buy a cheap compatible cable from ebay and check it yourself.

Sorry Chris, yes its the engine management light as stated in the topic title, should have repeated that in thread for clarity.

Sepulchrave, thanks for that, but is it as simple as it sounds?

Yep, thats the one. However, while VCDS is free it wont work with Windows 7 64bit (not that i could find anyway).

One method around this is to use Windows XP Mode on Windows 7 & that works fine.

Theres no special requirements if you already have a laptop with Windows XP.

Will the cable connect with my old 51 engine?

Will I do any harm by continuing to drive and ignoring it until it goes away, and what does EGR excessive flow mean?

Nonsense, it works perfectly well on Windows 7 x64, you're thinking of the old VAG Com, VCDS Lite is completely compatible, I know it works, I'm using it.

Yes.

No.

It means the ECU is hysterical because it's Italian and it misses its Mum.

Aaahh brilliant. I've not even tried downloading a new version & the one i've got is about 5 years old.

One other thing, it could just be a "bank B camshaft actuator" problem, my wife's 2002 1.4 BBY engine Polo gets that one every year when it is cold at only at the start of the year.

The only problem is that "bank B" is the second bank of a V configuration engine - and I've only ever noticed "bank A" when looking under the bonnet.

To the OP, this fault light will stay on until the fault condition has stopped and the engine has been restarted a few times, though the fault code will still be held in the engine ECU memory - so if you are lucky, the light will just go out soon - for a while, or more!

You are meant to rush along to your local VAG dealer to get it checked because that is how he makes his money?!

Just a thought, before I do anything, should I return it to the (independant) garage who changed the sump and Catalytic converter as this required exhaust disconnection and could have lead to the problem after a settling in period? Or would they just say they dont have the diagnostic capacity as they are independant?

They should have diagnostic, you could get them to tell you what the code(s) are and reset the fault at no cost.

Light still on, garage didnt have diagnostics, still no symptoms. Looks like I`ll have to try the cable and software as mentioned above. Only issue is, where does the cable connect in the engine bay please?

Many thanks

I had a similar problem. Took it to a garage with diagnostics, it was a faulty sensor which was telling the engine it wasn't at the right temperature when it actually was. Cost me about £50 for 5 mins work.

Cable ordered, software downloaded. If its of no consequence, can I reset the EML or does it still have to go to the garage?

If it sounds like of no consequence then yes, VCDS will let you clear the fault, but just one thing, if the fault is from the past and is no longer "active", why is it still keeping the fault light on? If, as it sounds like, it is still "active" then as soon as you restart the car, the fault light will get switched on again.

The garage might still need your money though - holidays etc to pay for!

Either way, you will now be in control of what to do next, or at least in a position to ask, like on here, for possible further help/guidance.

I think the device is faulty as after software/drivers installed it still doesnt recognise the device

What com port has the cable been assigned in the device manager? Sometimes it can be something unhelpful like com 29. If so you need to manually change it to a suitable one.
