OIII diesel new company car

Featured Replies

Hey guys.

I'm Sebastian from Poland. Actually I have O2 FL 1.6 TDI  like my company car. I next month I must prepare configuration for new company car. This will be O3 with diesel engine. I mostly drive on highway and normaly road - about 80%. 20% is city. I do about 60 000 km/year. My actually car is mostly OK. Sometimes I feel to low power or to low elastic (owertaking)

My budget for car give me chance for 3 below configuration:

1)  1.6 TDi DSG Elegance with Amazing, Canton and some aditional equipment

2)  2.0 TDI manual Elegance with Amazing, Canton and some aditional equipment

3  1.6 TDI manual Elegance and here i have big space for equipment :)

Maybe you can help me which way to go, maybe some good sugestions, experiences. Fuel conspmption is not important, this will be company car.

Maybe somone have experience 1.6 TDi manual vs. 1.6 TDI DSG. Question about dynamic with DSG, elastic.  Is car with DSG really feel more power, owertaking is easier compare to manual gearbox? Is chance that I really feel that DSG is brillant if mostly I will use not in the city. Traffic is not problem for me. I'm staying in trafic few times in year.

Maybe someone have experience 1.6TDi manual  O2 FL compare to 1.6 TDI manual O3? Is O3 feel more power, becouse lower weight?

In Poland price 2.0 TDi manual is the same like 1.6 TDI DSG.

Many thank's for any sugestion.

Hello and welcome!

If you're after performance, I'd surely go for more displacement (i.e. 2.0) unless you don't plan to remap the 1.6 (at additional cost and on your own).

HTH,

I'd suggest heading down to your local dealership and asking to try the various engines with a cover story that you are planning to buy privately. Only you will know which you like best, I found dealers very accomodating in allowing me to test (where available) the engines I wanted and let me have a look around a similar car with the specification I was looking for.

I would not be seen dead in an auto but some people do like them so I cannot really comment.about how they compare.

I have tried the 1.6 and 2.0 TDI both with manual gearboxes, I never tried the DSG. The 1.6 is a nice engine, smooth and refined. It's also in my opinion quieter than the 2.0 at all speeds from stationary to over 120kph. It requires a bit more thrashing about if you want to drive with vigour than the 2.0 due to the lower power levels. I in the end went for the 2.0 TDI in my car based on the fact it goes like stink, is close in performance to the VRS (RS) and from what research I have done gets roughly the same fuel efficiency in comparison to the smaller engine. I love putting my foot down in my car on a regular basis and I've been described in the past as driving like an old lady.

As to options, I have the winter pack (heated screen, washer nozzles and heated seats) which I love as the diesel does take an age to warm up compared to my old Kia Cee'd 1.4 petrol. It's lovely to get in when it's freezing outside and within seconds feel warmed up.

It took about 30seconds-1minute to defrost the window this morning coming from work as I watched others scraping their cars clear. Options I'd have loved to add would be the aux heater, I don't know what the weather is like in Poland (I'll visit one day) but it seems a great idea if the weather would suit using it. The LED lights at the rear look very nice in my opinion as I saw my first O3 with them equipped the other morning. I also think the upgraded headlights seem a good option (if a little expensive).

That's probably the most accurate description of the 1.6 vs the 2.0 TDi that I have read so far. Completely agree, although, unlike you, I decided on the 1.6 for it's smoothness!

Do you have maybe comparison 1.6 TDi manual to DSG?

Astec123 - Thanks for claryfication :)

The DSG 7-speed really suits the 1.6 TDi engine. I wouldn't buy one though because of the reported problems with this transmission. I had the Golf Mk6 TDi 1.6 DSG and it was a nice car. DSG and 2.0 TDi not so nice.

1.6 TDi smooth, refined and revvy - adequate power, could do with more low-down torque - keep the revs up and its ok

2.0 TDi unrefined, especially below 1500 rpm - powerful and torquey

1.6 works well in DSG version, the manual is fine

2.0 not so good in DSG version, works better as a manual.

For those of you who want to know the real gear ratios of all these versions, have a look at the Seat Leon brochure; there's a lot more info in there, particularly around engine speed and mph per 1000rpm in various gears. 5th gear in the manual 1.6 is pretty close to 6th in the 2.0. If you look at the figures and torque it almost explains how you need to drive each variant to get the best out of it....

I have a 2013 Superb Greenline FL (so slightly older 1.6 engine to Octavia but same power), but being the Greenline it has the 6 speed manual gearbox, my wife has a 2014 Octavia 1.6 TDI DSG, so a pretty good comparison between the two.

Both cars are fine with adequate performance and amazing economy, my Superb averages over 60mpg and the Octavia is roughly the same, we're both pretty steady drivers, not slow but usually keeping within the speed limits motorways included.

With the manual gearbox on mine and having come from a VW Passat CC 2.0 TDI DSG you do notice having to use the gearbox a bit more and allow for the lower torque initially but you soon adapt to it. I am a fan of the DSG and you don't really notice the lower torque as it very quickly puts you in a more relevant gear so the DSG is the more relaxing car to drive around town.

On the motorway my 6 speed manual revs lower at 70mph than the 7 speed DSG, the manual at 70mph is doing 1800rpm, the DSG a little over 2000rpm, very little in it but the manual has the more relaxed feel on longer and/or higher speed journeys. Note the 1.6 TDI Octavia Elegance has a five speed manual gearbox, only the Octavia Greenline has a six speed manual gearbox, another reason I feel the 1.6 is better with DSG, it has far greater flexibility than the five speed manual.

The engines are nice and smooth in 1.6 guise, you really need to drive both a manual and DSG in both 1.6 and 2.0 versions yourself to see what you feel suits you the most.

Given the three choices you list, personally I'd have the 1.6 DSG Elegance, good spec, good engine with a DSG gearbox that really suits the 1.6 diesel - but that's just me. Ask ten more people and you'll get ten different answers as to which one they would choose.
