1.4 mpi air intake

Hi guys,

 

thinking about making a new cold air intake as the stock one is useless, read a few topics/guides on doing it and apparently it does improve things a bit for the engine.

 

just a few questions tho, to anyone who's done it to their mpi, before I start cutting stuff up...

 

Is it really as simple as.. cutting out old intake from air box and making hole larger to attach new larger bore pipe? 

And does it not matter about the warm intake from mani? 

 

Also if anyone has done it, what sort of pipe would be best to use?

Ive done the mod and in simple terms yes it is as easy as it sounds :) literally take the old intake pipe off cut the bigger hole in the air box, put new cold air pipe in hole and seal it in with some sealant people recommend tiger seal for the sealant. In my opinion there is a massive difference with this mod, car feels a bit more torquier and the induction noise sounds awesome :)

And the i dont think it matters about the pipe from the mani, i just pulled it off :)

Yeah mate bought it as an 'in-between' car when some a** wrote my mk1 golf off, but it's grown on me   :D

 

but yeah cheers for the info, very helpful   :)  that pipe looks ideal too, especially if those red end cones come off?

 

alright sweet have you completely taken it off from the mani too or just left it in place?

 

nice bay btw, looks a lot better with the induction too   :)

I don't want to be a troll ... but with a cold air intake, for a petrol engine (I am not sure this is used for the diesel engines as well), which has the 6Y0129594A inlet switch, to take hot air from the engine bay when it's cold outside and less hot air from front bumper when it's warm, will it take longer to heat up during winter time? I don't think this is a good permanent mod. And talking about the efficiency as AdamJonezy pictures say, (IMHO) the pipe is way too close to the radiator hose and more than that, it's more bended than the original one .. so it might end up with just a Placebo effect. If this would be a performance mod, I'd put that pipe somewhere else, without any other heat sources on it's way and less twisted.  :dull:

This might be a good point, but maybe not for the reason you give. 

As I understand these systems, there's a thermostatic element that controls a blend flap, resulting in a mixture of air coming from the warm and cold air feeds, primarily to remove the possibility of throttle body freezing (not a huge concern in UK climate), rather than to hasten warm-up.

If you take out the warm air feed, the thermostatic control of the blend flap will max out in the direction of the warm air inlet, because it will sense that it isn't getting enough pre-warmed air. Certainly until the general engine-bay temperature results in the air being pulled into that hole being warm enough to relax the thermostat's grip.

This may result in no air at all coming through your massively over-sized cold air inlet pipe, at least until the engine bay is good and hot, anyway; maybe never?

But the original plastic intake pipe with integral thermostatic flap valve isn't there any more with the mod. It's scrapped and replaced with the new, larger intake hose with no valve, so the engine only takes cold air from the front of the car.

Oh, fair enough, I assumed ( :D ) the thermostat/flap valve was in the bottom of the airbox.  Carry on.

No worries, none of us get it right all the time :)

It was my mistake, I should have been more precise.

The pipe isnt as twisted as it looks in the picture mate. And my car warms up just as quick as it used to with the cold air feed. Ive had no problems with this mod and its been on for a while now. I understand were your coming from tho mate :)

Cheers for all the info, as Wino says the hot air intake is to do with throttle body freezing/icing, carb'd engines have this to prevent icing but mpi etc engines are a lot less prone to icing due to where the fuel is injected. Some injection engines will have coolant going through the throttle body to keep it warm, my guess is the mpi doesn't so has the hot air intake fitted. But as you say in our climate it's not such a problem and should get enough heat from the engine anyway   :)

 

Haven't had a chance to do it yet tho, got the pipe but might try find a fabia in scrappy to get air box incase anything does go wrong with it in place.

 

Completely irrelevant... but does anyone know any decent component speakers for under 60 quid? I'd only be running them off my jvc head unit, I know not ideal would obviously be better amped, but just need something bit better to replace my stock ones that's why I'm only looking cheap.

Seen the JBL gt6-6c as they're only 50 quid, 50rms and 4ohm so should be fine to run off HU? Or is it just not really worth it due to the measly amp in the HU?
