why bother?

Featured Replies

sold my dragon box to octygone and when he put it on the rollers he got 175bhp. which is good. i also had a cupra air intake and pikey mods, plus when i had the box i had it set on level 16 (with no smoke at all) so my vrs should have been around 180bhp. this getts me thinkin, why bother with remaps and things when a cheap tunning box which can be removed and sold on (as i did) gets just as much power?

Any figures from a remapped car on the same RR on the same day?

that would be good to know? there are the results on another thread but it dosent state what mods have been done.

I think the dragon box is the best in removeable tuning box technology, at the moment. But nothing can really better a good custom remap designed for the specific car, usually on a rolling road to test. :)

Thats why I'd spend the extra

Yes that would be good to know as the figures for one car run on it's own don't mean an awful lot. For example if the RR was comparable to Jabba's then remapped PD130's frequently get 200bhp which is a significant and worthwhile increase over the figures you've posted for a 130PD with a tuning box.

Tuning boxes are designed to interrupt the signals too and from the ECU. So, they either modify the output signals to injectors etc, or they modify the input signals from the sensors. Either way, it's a way of tricking the ECU. Now, on old technology like the Fabia ECU for example, you can get decent gains with this with relatively few problems, but never as good as a proper remap which allows much better control of various systems. This means that a good remap will be less smoky than a tuning box and ultimately produce better performance.

but still how would a good custom remap be any better if the power figures are simular?

Are the figures similar though?

has anyone had a vrs with a box on then got the same car remapped? what differences where noticed?

I know of a guy who had a tuning box (don't know what make though) and then swapped it for a remap. The remap gave similar peak torque figures, but much more end power, and less smoke. Also, the power delivery was smoother. I don't remember the actual figures, and also it was on a Polo 1.4 TDi, not a Fabia vrs.

Adam.

Had one of the cheap EVRY mod boxes before my remap. Remap was much better. :D Smoother, more powerful, no ignition light etc.

Yeah, the only thing I can see a custom remap doing is getting the drive a lot smoother than anything generic (which is what a tuning box is, no?)

Also, I suspect a custom remap will allow a better punch low down and high up the rev range. :) Area under the curves and all that. ;)

Also AFAIK tuning boxes only alter fueling whereas a remap will also alter boost.

A very good remap will alter more than just boost and fuel. It will also address the fuel timing, something which I don't think any tuning box will do. Also, a good remap will not interfere with limp home etc, whereas many (if not all) tuning boxes will.

 Pretty impressive performance from Dragon then from a non-boost affecting bit of tuning. :)

So there we have it. Custom maps also tweak the boost to get maximum amount of use out of the turbo.

Yes mine with a jabba remap came back with 179.5.

However it did smoke ALOT and I think it's down on boost

So despite a suspected running problem it still made more than the car running the tuning box. Anymore?

I dont think so I was the only fabia that had been remapped. but I'm sure a leon cupra TDi made over 200bhp, which is the same engine.

I say I'm down on boost, I'm only going on what was said at the RR days as I did not pull as hard.

with a re-map they can have power where they want and as said increase more than just fueling, a tuning box basically (as far as i understnad them) exagerates the signals to the injectors so amplifies the affct they have.

Just seen some of the results from the same RR, a standard PD130 made 159bhp so the tuning box is only gaining 16bhp over stock. Not as impressive as it first sounds now.

A decent remap, generic or custom will alter many more parameters than a tuning box can.

As ChipTuner said, a tuning box interferes with signals from sensors...

A decent remap, generic or custom will change boost, fuel injector timing, injector quantity, torque map, fuel pressure, fuel temperature, load... etc etc etc...

Try that with a tuning box, dragon or not!

My STANDARD vRS Fabia came up with 160.6bhp at the Regal rollers, so effectively the Dragon gives a 17bhp increase

Didn't get a Leon Cupra TDI ECU by mistake did you?! :P ;)

Isn't that 30.6 bhp better?

Personally I've always thought the tuning box route offers by far the best bang for your buck.

No the 160bhp was for a STANDARD car, the car with a tuning box made 175bhp.
