I tried out a HUD a few weeks ago and I liked having a digital speed display in a higher position. I didn't like the reflective sticky thing or the untidiness of the unit sitting there.

The one I bought failed after a couple of weeks, flattening my battery and annoying me greatly. AA visit and expensive proper battery charger purchase.

So I'm thinking maybe one of these gauges in an A pillar pod.

There are GPS speedo units available too but they're pretty small numbers and expensive.

One of the reasons for this is that my car has a mph speedo with kph in small writing inside. I'm used to ignoring the mph but I think it would be quicker and more intuitive looking at a gauge like this.

Given that NZ poilce are ultra-focussed on speed at the moment, ticketing for 101 in a national 100kph speed limit zone!

The only thing I see is that the obd port always has power, so whatever you plug in must be low powered or have the ability to switch off the interface plugged into the port.

It says it powers off a few seconds after the engine turns off. The HUD did. Until it broke, then it didn't.

Rob,

You may want to take a look at Ultraguage. I have just got mine. Available from the USA, but mine arrived within 4 days.

They have been around for a while and get good reviews. It is very neat too.

Currently @ 65 US Dollars.

That looks pretty cool but I really want something more integrated, less nickable!

I use a smart phone (Nexus 4) in a custom cradle. I run a bluetooth OBD2 blob that cost pennies from China and the Torque Pro app. I effective;y have 3 speedos. The speedo, OBD2 speed and GPS speed.

Once I wire in my USB adapter, I'll have QI contact-less charging too. (As running navigation really hits battery life.)
