Scout - Stream mp3 upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

My first post here so please be gentle... I'm just about to take delivery of an '08 plate Octavia Scout 2.0 TDi PD  that’s fitted with a Stream MP3 HU. I've been looking on the forums on what’s required to upgrade this to a satnav and Bluetooth unit.

My query is what unit would be best?

I have a Maxidot display but not a MFSW, I REALLY need Bluetooth and the Satnav would be good but not essential. I'd also like to keep all the functionality of the reversing display etc..

What would you suggest that I get and would I need additional parts to make it all work?

I look forward to your expert reply’s.

Regards,

Alex

Totally depends on how much money you want to spend

Hi PaulBrown,

I don't want to spend an absolute fortune but I don't mind shelling out a bit to get a good system.

Alex

I¨m in the same boat as you, I have 07 Octavia with the Stream MP3, but not the maxi dot MFD though. At the moment I have a small unit to be able to listen DAB (it¨s called Tiny Audio C3, not sure if you can get it in the UK?), and it also have bluetooth so that I can receive and make phone calls and stream music. It functions ok, but it doesn¨t look good with all the extra wiring (dab antenna, power cable for the unit and a aux cable). Also, the volume is quite low when making phone calls and the mic isn¨t too good either.

So I¨ve been looking to upgrade the radio. At the moment, I¨m considering either getting a Bolero radio and a bluetooth module, or maybe go for an ANS-810.  The ANS-810 will cost me about 260 pounds plus another 120 pounds in shipping and taxes.

The cost of the Bolero and the bluetooth module is unknown at the moment as I have not been able to figure out what will fit in my car. Would appreciate if someone could give some part numbers for the units delivered in 07.

Another option would be the use the Stream HU, and some aftermarket kit to give me USB and bluetooth. An ideal solution would a USB cable connected to the stream HU somehow in glove compartment and discreet microphone, preferable wireless. If someone knows of some products that can do this, I would appreciate it.

Amundsen+ with but in BT is the easiest option to get Sat Nav & BT with full integration.

Not all '+' units have BT though, so do check.

If Sat Nav is not of interest then go for a Bolero.

I've heard that the Bolero unit has some issues with back lightning on pre-FL models. Did the pre-FL come with the Bolero or was it only the Columbus?

Bolero was FL onwards. There are some issues with Bolero units as you say, but it only seems to be one manufacturer / variant that was affected.

I don't think the pre-FL had the option of the Columbus, but it can be retrofitted successfully.

As the OP has a 2008, he should be OK with the Columbus battery drain issue but would need to add the cost of a BT module and loom to get the functionality required.

Later preFLs had the Columbus option. Mine had it fitted at build.

I believe I've seen the Columbus in cars as early as 2007. Can a new Columbus be fitted in a 2007 (as long as the can bus is ok)?

I had a 2007 and retrofitted a Columbus.

Had to upgrade the CAN Gateway as it was an early '07 model. I have that very gateway up for sale on here.

Or you can get a modified firmware to avoid battery drain.

I just fitted a DAB one in my mine which is a 2014 unit. It is a 2008 car so I don't see why not.

Note you can't modify the firmware in the very newer ones (not sure its the best idea anyway) to deal with battery drain, so you may be looking at a CAN gateway update in a 2007 - as KB indicates it is right on the cusp.

How difficult would it be to upgrade the can bus, and where can I find one?

On a 2008 it should be above the driver's right foot. Easiest access is from a cover under the scuttle panel & wiper arm linkage.

Others say it's easier from in the footwell though.

I have a suitable CAN gateway for sale, but I don't think you'll need it.

Get you car scanned with VCDS to see which CAN controller you have fitted first.

You'll need VCDS to code a new one if you do fit one.

As above KB is selling one and its easy to fit but needs care with the coding.

I retrofitted a Columbus to a 2008 scout without battery drain issues, however dakota558 has a 2007 which may or may not have battery drain.

That's correct, I have an early 2007. I haven't checked with VCDS yet, but I think I need to upgrade the can bus.

That's correct, I have an early 2007. I haven't checked with VCDS yet, but I think I need to upgrade the can bus.

Early 2007 you probably will, late 2007 maybe not, but a vcds scan will reveal all

As above; early to mid 2007 and you may get lucky.

Late 2007 onwards and you should be fine.

Always check with VCDS or by physically looking first.

If it's early 2007 the gateway may be behind the glovebox. You could look there.

If it is finding the part number and swapping it will be so much easier in comparison.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replys.

So as I understand it, If i get a Amundsen+ unit (With BT included) it will be a simple plug and play (May have to get it coded in to the car) and will keep full functionality (Reversing desplay etc.) and will just need to fit a mic.

I would also like to get the MFSW, as I understand it this is exactly the same plug and play (With possable VCDS coding)?

Regards,

Alex

MFSW will need a new airbag loom to connect to the buttons. Should be about £16.

There may be one or two buttons that don't work correctly, even after coding.

But generally P'n'P with coding. As is the Amundsen.

After looking around a bit, I'll most likely end up with the ANS-810. It's tempting having an OEM stereo, but it seems like the cost will be too high to justify.

Can anyone here recommend where to get it from? As far as I can see, there is at least two different units around, but I can't figure out the differences (if there are any).
