Turbo Failure Golf R / S3 / Leon 280

Good news (or maybe not!) I spoke to SEAT finance, their only condition is that if I hand it back / part ex with them it must be returned to stock. No hesitation, no suggesting it was not a good idea sir, although just stopped short of encouraging me to go ahead sir, have fun!

  • Keith, there is an 18 page thread on failed R turbos on Golf mk7 forums. 17.5 pages are just banter / panicky idiots (Oh I wish I'd not bought this dodgy Golf now), and it turns out only 2 failures I

  • A Turbo is under £1000, if it is Crank Bearings, Rings/Pistons that goes obviously you can do a Rebuild. But a Base engine is getting on for £3,000   That is the gamble you take, not just a ECU &am

  • Indeed. I'd like to know the RPN for the turbo when they did the DFMEA studies.

All in writing Steve. Not just phone call.

  • Author

I'll never get that Keith. There is no clause in the contract I wanted to check and sound them out.

That needs to be in writing, and it is odd that Seat should say that,

because a Seat Approved Used Car that a buyer has to make a Warranty Claim on could have a Failing Engines Warranty rejected

just as Skoda have been doing with failing Twinchargers that were still in the Period of the Original Warranty but

a check of the ECU showed they had previously been Remapped to Stage 1.

Nopthing to do with warranty! Read the post again.

SEAT UK = warranty

SEAT Finance = terms of HP agreement. In the past there has been a clause forbidding ANY mods, if done it is considered a breach of the terms and is void. This is NOT the case today, at least mine is not.

I'm doing it, you can spend all your life worrying excessively about most things, and miss out. Understand the risk, mitigate it and then JFDI.

Exactly!!I hear so many people saying that they will only modify their car after the warranty runs out. Fair enough, but the costs of any failures basically remain the same.,

Whether the car is in or out of warranty, if you map the ECU and the turbo / engine implodes the costs fall on the owner, so waiting becomes irrelevant as all the non modified parts are still covered anyway. You have just introduced a delay into the process.

Plus it's more likely to go bang if you modify a part worn car. Once the novelty of the extra thrust wears off, I found I only used it for overtaking, otherwise I'd never know it was remapped. The additional fuel eco was welcome too. Do it early, get it out of your system and it will cause the least disruption in the long term

I get all that stuff, but from previous threads you have said you are not tracking the car, and you are an advanced driver,

and you explained about overtaking.

So really the thing is, on 60 mph NSL roads in the UK is the remap on a 280ps / 1,450 kg car just something you want

to do,

but because you can, and without any practical need.

Surely a 280 ps/1,450 kg Automatic car can do safe overtakes with the Engine Management it comes from the factory with,

without the need of an extra 20-40 bhp.

Is there really a Fuel Saving on the 280ps engine with the Remap while being used at UK National Limits,

because the Map / Engine Management from the Factory is towards economy and Emissions already,

and this is why it can be Remapped to give more Power & Performance.

Why did VW make the Golf R 300ps, surely on a NSL 60mph road the 220ps engine would have sufficed?

They are now considering a 420ps model, why bother ;)

AWD / Heavier, you do not use all the available power or ability 90% of the time possibly.

The safety features are there 100% of the time, except maybe when you turn them off.

But you can have one car, Transport, Family Transport, Spirited/ Sporty Driver all rolled into one vehicle.

Fast Estate and you can move Fridge Freezers as well.

But the truth often, Bragging Rights.

& Fatter Cars need more power to do the same as lighter cars,

& as an Example , Golfs got Heavier & Heavier and needed more and more HP just to do the same as lighter cars used to.

Now you can have not so heavy & still the Developed Faster Engines & more Speed.

But the UK NSL is still 60 mph. (70 mph)

& many cars can break that by 150% easily.

A 280 ps car is not going to necessarily cover a route faster or safer than a 140ps car.

& a 500 ps car might actually be slower over the same route.

But obviously if the average speed for all 3 is 65mph, they might all cover it in the same time.

& the 140 ps 1,200 kg car might do the exact same overtakes as a 500 ps 2,400 kg AWD car.

Maybe even safer than the Fat Lump, maybe just not with the same imposing look.

Kind of missed the point. The Golf 7 GTi was already in production with a 220ps engine, so why bother sticking another 80ps on the 7R. Slight weight increase aside, 80ps is way more than needed to compensate.

Surely the R420 is just a complete waste of time, as the 7R is such an accomplished all round car?

Devils advocate put to one side, what I'm trying to say, & VW have identified is that there are many different customer types, and what their idea of a great car is. Why not make cars people want :)

When I make a cup of coffee I like it strong & black, the stronger the better. I'm sure this might be wrong to some people who like weak milky coffee.

Edit, sorry was typing as you posted.

Obviously

Because people want choices is why there are choices.

FWD, RWD, Part Time AWD, AWD, etc,

Light, Heavy, Sporty, Luxury, and Badges.

So choices are good for people.

& Modifying is good,  but please if we are honest we do not Remap a 280 ps Road Car just because the Overtaking is not good enough.

FS George, if you apply your logic we'd all be driving around in Prius's

In a logical world there is simply no need for anything more than 100bhp, maybe not even that. Thank goodness we don't. It's not bragging rights, I couldn't give a stuff what anyone else thinks about what car I've got, in fact I'd prefer it to be under the radar, and that's part of the fun of remapping, quietly going about your business without getting held up. Why do Farrari, Lambo, McLaren et al exist? I'll wager that if you had the chance, you'd jump at owning one, otherwise I'm struggling to see why you'd spend a lot of time surfing a car owners forum!

Accept that cars are fun! You don't need to break the NSL to enjoy / use the power. get over it!

Eh??

So please enlighten me so then I'll understand why I'm doing it.

Thanks

I'm sure the owners of other high powered sports cars would appreciate it too. ;)

I actually like the Seat Leon 280 very much, and remember in post after post suggesting you try one, i had tried a few.

& i will buy one once they are cheaper still, and do not want a Golf R, after trying them and not wanting or needing AWD.

So not slagging,

and i fully understand moding and wanting to enhance and upgrade.

So it is obviously right for you,

but seeing as there are possible future issues with the engines, a Warranty is worth its weight IMO,

but since you did your calculations then all is as you want.

But putting to Standard might include a rather large bill.

Have fun with it.

Yes!

Its not the power, its the power to weight!

It's free. I'll have a remote device that I'll be able to upload the standard map back when I'm done with the car. As I understand it, there is no limit to how many maps I can have stored on the mappers online portal. I've already though about having a performance map (which won't be as much as I can wring out of it), stock obviously, and a valet parking setting that cuts power and limits engine speed to stop the caring purple parking drivers from ragging it when its cold.

Worst case is a drive across country to get it done in their workshop (Shark do the same thing)

Thanks, I will, and safely within the NSL too :)

Many of us modify cars, and because we want to.

Fill your boots.

If it goes tits up they will help you with the Software, but do not kid yourself they will rebuild your engine.

PS

I already have a car with a Switchable Map & Secure Lock,

so you are teaching Granny to suck eggs, as i am obviously doing with you.

Well, there you go then! We both know the risks, and it's fun. I'm guessing that your engine hasn't exploded in a ball of molten forged pistons yet? :)

None ever have, but then they are never just Remapped, Blueprinting first helps, and get the Basic Engine & components all correct,

not just up the Engine Management and MAP.

But then always the Faults or possible failure components were known then the Improvements made.

The engine we are talking about from your point has still not show all possible issues or failures,

and VWG are having as it seems Turbo & Gearbox issues,

These are the Current latest Versions from 265ps-297ps  plus used in the Audi, VW's & Seat maybe even Skoda.

Steve,

Wish you all the best in your project upgrade adventure, with your Leon 280 > 330.

Hope all goes well for you and that you achieve what you want, without drama .

Looking forward, as said before, to your review and on going reports.

Here we go then Steve!
