Rear view mirror

Featured Replies

When I bought my original Yeti from new, I specified the Auto Lights/light Assistant(can't remember which) in order to get the higher positioned rear view mirror, which was fine.

My current Yeti, bought second hand, has the lower placed mirror. I thought I would get used to it, but after almost a year still find it intrusive.

The problem is mainly my body shape, although only 6ft 4 ins, I have a long body section, and even with the seat on it's lowest setting my head is only an inch or so from the roof, so I find I am looking almost down into the mirror and doing a lot of neck bending going around corners because of blind spots.

I know it has been brought up on the forum from time to time since the Yeti came out, but cannot find anywhere where someone has moved the mirror to the higher position.

Does anyone know if it is possible to have it moved without damaging the windscreen? We love the car and don't mind paying for it to be done. Tony

As a matter of interest have you ever had a vehicle you didn't have a problem with as far as a central mirror is concerned.

Maybe a windscreen replacement tech could help.

No, not really, my last two Roomsters were fine.

It was OK on my original Yeti, where the mirror was significantly higher for the reasons stated.

I'd recon the windscreen specialists would be worth a try.

think you might crack the screen trying to demount the stalk, they are bonded on in production - however good luck if you try this route!!

Could you not unclip the mirror and fix a new bonded mounting above?

I agree a windscreen fitter would be able to sort it

Thanks all, doesn't sound like it's been tried by anyone yet, I'll try a windscreen specialist first.

I wonder if it might be easier to get a replacement windscreen with higher mirror mount?  The screens are delivered with the mirror mounts bonded in place - in the olden days they would occasionally fall off but I think these days they are pretty firmly bonded.

I think I may have to go down that route eventually, as we want to keep the car for some time. There is an Autoglass depot not many miles away, I hadn't thought about them coming with the mirror mounts ready bonded, I was hopeful someone on the forum might have already done it, looks like a job for the experts though. I'll get some input from Autoglass.

The only way to do this is a new windscreen with the higher mount and then to order a new interior mirror as well.

Just thinking outside the box perhaps the seat could be raised to full height, open the sun roof and put the mirror on the roof...................,sorry didn't mean to cause any offence just had a funny 5mins like you say you have a long body section for the yeti mirror,I'm a couple of inches shorter (in height) have the seat quite low but still have plenty of headroom (with sunroof)great driving position and no problem with mirror, once again no offence intended.

No offence taken, unfortunately I don't have a sun roof! All my life I've had occasional back problems, several doctors have blamed my long spinal column, rightly or wrongly.

I can feel a visit to Autoglass coming up, thinking back I did have an MGB Roadster soft-top in the seventies which I got rid of as my eyes were level with the top rail of the windscreen, which was quite shallow anyway, much shallower than the hard-top version.

You can get the mirror boss off but there is a risk of the screen cracking off but if done with care it can be done....heat is the key!!

Pm me & will go over it on phone if you want.

Just a thought but depending on how long you plan to keep this car (and bearing in mind I have no idea about how the interior mirror is fixed and whether it is even possible to remove just this) would it an option for you to remove the mirror but leave the mount bonded to the screen and fit a "temporary" mirror in a position to suit you. I know you used to be able to buy mirrors that stuck to the windscreen with a big sucker to give you a wider field of view or a rear view mirror for the passenger seat when accompanying a learner driver. Not the most elegant of solutions but if it is possible and would work for you it would be a a cheap option and later on when you sell the car you just replace the original mirror.

That sounds like a possibility, good idea, I'm going to speak to Fuch and find out how risky it is to remove the housing and consider the options. Tony
