Buying car for under a £1000

Featured Replies

Looking for a used car for the Mrs and have been looking at various ones e.g fabia, octavia, focus, fiesta...etc.

It's has got to be something medium to small, doesn't matter petrol or diesel with cheap tax and insurance.

The main thing is that it has to be reliable so have been looking at cars with service history and 12 months mot.

Just looking for a few suggestions and have almost settled on a used mk1 fabia as should anything go wrong I can come on here for advice.

There are quite a few mk1 fabia's on eBay and autotrader so just surfing through a few at the moment.

Thanks,

As simple as possible so there is less to go wrong.

Anything with the old 2.0 SDI non-turbo diesel might be worth looking at.

Beyond that almost anything goes since you're really playing a number game.

Micras seem to last ok as do old Civics. Whatever you get will probably need something done or be on borrowed time. I'd check tyres brakes and other critical things just to make sure nothing has been overlooked that will make the car unsafe.

Hello,

A 1.6 petrol Ford Focus Zetec would be my choice for under a grand. Plenty to choose from so you can be fussy and parts etc are cheap as chips...

Had a couple without issue myself.

Cheers

Focus would be spot on or maybe even a Clio DCI, a strong engine which will see 70-80mpg

At this price, don't focus on a particular car. Do a search on eBay and autotrader and go and look at a few near you with a new mot then buy the one that feels best.

As above..you'll be amazed what £1k will get you!!

Good call,

did this last year with a budget of £500...

got a Proton wira diesel only 70k with history, new MOT, near 50 mpg

dont just search the popular brands, old folks buy cheap cars and keep them serviced and sparkly for years

so what if it looks yuk, I had 6 months reliable commuting in it and sold it on for £350 :)

I paid £500 for the Clio and have spent about £1100 on it inc purchase to date, nightmare

Yeah that's what worries me buying a car for a grand want to try and avoid big bills.

That's why I want to try and stick with Skoda as I know in general they are reliable motors.

Two I have seen so far the octavia, apart from being a horrible colour, looks in good nick temped to ring and ask a few questions. Let me know what you think.

At this price the most difficult thing is to avoid cars that are being sold because they have expensive issues on the way or bodged up to sell.

Make sure any purchase gets a thorough test drive and inspection.

Having been burnt I can't recommend this enough,

It can be a risky game at this price point. As the chances of buying something that requires more in maintenance costs are quite high!

As said, do a search generically across brands within a certain distance of home and see what comes up.

Richard - have you got any Fabias you need to get rid of?!

The word lemon comes to mind

I had a look last night

Found a 91k miler (standard) for £1250

There is some good metal out there for £1000. Nine or months MOT and the good old 1.9 VAG engine will get you a steady Fabia or Polo for example. Personally I always look at those with the fewest previous owners and lots of paperwork.

Good luck

my nephew has a 2002 Golf 1.4 petrol for sale in really nice condition too think he wants £1000 for it.

I can pass his number onto you if you like.

He lives in kiveton nr worksop

Get the cheapo VRS from near Steveopc?
