  • Id personally solder it and use heat shrink over the soldered joint. Wouldnt dream of just twisting wires together personally

  • when i fitted my puddle lights i crimped my connections from the new wiring install + led lamp assemblies as it was a given that itd be permanent the moment i drilled holes in the wing mirrors , also

  • Odd. i linked my gallery must be a dodgy link lol!

Just looked at this thread, got so many leds and it all looks great. Really like the footwell lights and under the door puddle lights, that's what i'd like to do but definitely gunna need some help, in person or over the forum, any help will be appreciated :)

I like puddle lights too. Keep thinking a about putting them in the mirror but havent had a brave spurt yet to do it aha.

Would be nice though

Just been watching some videos on installing led strips in the boot, seem straight forward so that's gunna be the first one i try out probably next week. If i get brave enough then i'll try it with puddle lights under the front two doors but the boot needs doing as the OEM light isn't very good. Thinking of cutting it off completely and just running led strips in the boot.. Thoughts on this?

I'll be careful but hopefully it all goes smooth. Anyone has a solder i can borrow? :D

Good luck mate, post pics when you are done

Thanks :) yeah will do, will order the strips when i get paid in 3 days and see where i can go from there

I got 30cm strips X3 for the boot. 1 either side under the plastic trim and one where the space for the warning triangle is. I got cheap strips with m3 sticky backing. Think I paid no more than a couple of quid. I spend most of my money upgrading the exterior bulbs lol.

I've seen a roll of 5m for like £7 from what looks like a decent fleabay seller, plus 2 years warranty. Not sure i'll need the whole 5m though unless i want my car to look like the coca cola van :D

So would you plan to run one long strip then or cut it into sections? If you cut into sections then you will need to add the wiring too. If you buy separate strips they are pre-wired.

Yeah pre cut strips might be a better idea since i haven't got a soldering iron and don't plan on buying one just for this. I might see if i can find brighter ones than that, think they were like 5630 or 5500 or something. Cheers though

  • Author

Yeah, well the brightest ones which are 5630 i believe, even brighter than the 5050 ones but that's the right ones just need brighter :)

Trying to find ones with longer wires to make it easier

5050 - is that what you mean? I bought these a while back for a different car and they were pretty damn good

Just ordered some, delivery expected 3rd Feb - 23rd Feb, bloody hell didn't realise they're sending them from Jupiter

That's some shipping! Have you gone for the Amazon ones? It's easy enough to lengthen the wires tbh. So many different ways. I usually just use black connectors and insulation tape, not everyone's preferred method but I can't solder and never used heat shrink.

Yeah the ones from the link you sent me. What wires will i need to extend them and where do they sell them? Is it a 12V wire or? I can solder but i haven't got a soldering iron. How did you connect the wires? Strip them and twist them together or?

I went to a local electrical shop on the high street and bought a few meters of the roll. Just used very thin wire that they advised, think it was 12v audio wire 20amp yeah.

I used block connectors, just strip the 2 ends and and twist, one goes on one side of the block and the other end in the other side and screw down to make the contact

I've used the first link before and for a little more ease I would be tempted to try the second link for my next work...

Soldering is easy mate, and heat shrink is even easier.

Give it a practice with a few bits of old wire. Youll get a much stronger, more reliable joint that you can trust more IMO.

Youll never go back ;)

Can't you just strip both ends of wires, twist them together to join them and just tape them up? Would that not work?

Asking for a dodgey connection. Itll soon come undone.

Cant beat a soldered joint IMO.

If you're gonna do things like this, jts well worth investing in a soldering iron, watching some YouTube vids and having a go at it yourself. Its really not difficult.

You dont even need to bother with flux because the solder has a flux core on the smaller stuff.

Depends if it's wanted to be quickly whipped off before sale or dealer work etc in which case it might be worth using crimps. But yeah I agree if it's permanent soldering every time and some heat shrink :)
