DSG or Manual?

I just has a Toyota Auris 1.6 Auto for a hire car.

It has a CVT.

OMG totally hated it compared to my DSG.

I like and most would probably agree that having the changes is kinda part of driving. I do 15-20k a year so have to be happy in my motor.

CVT doesnt seam to provide any feed back at all, and quite often leaving junctions was screaming itself to death high in the rev range, where as a DSG would have changed up and up and the take off from the line would have been and felt soo much smoother and even safer at times.

 

Saying that i absolutely love my DSG, works great on my PD right foot planted and just point the front end where you want it to go and hold on for the ride.

 

Mine has Subaru's latest and greatest turbo WRX engine, so actually uses the full rev range. In Sports Plus mode, it emulates an 8 speed gearbox all the time so you get 'normal' behaviour out of it. You can also manually switch it to 6 or 8 speed normally if you want to drive it with the paddles. I really, really like it.

 

I can imagine a weedy engine would be annoying though (I've only driven this CVT).

I love the DSG box, super quick changes, the only thing I would highlight is to take a good test drive.

 

Mine was jerky on take off when fully warmed up, bought unseen through the trade and out of warranty on miles.

 

Over almost 5 years it's got a bit worse, now on 130k miles, but it does the job. I have to keep it as I'm not prepared to take the financial hit.   

 

I would still buy DSG again as I reckon I was just unlucky with this one.

Do any of the experts out there have a view on the reliability/longevity of the DSG in a taxi doing 25k miles a year, or would it be less risky to stick with a manual box?

All the time!!  What exactly do you mean by 'racing style'?  Isn't it rather noisy driving at 25+mph in 1st and 55+ in 2nd?

Use the common sense - DSG is similar to the clutch. If your clutch lasts 200k km of ordinary driving style then DSG lasts half in taxi... stop, pick up customers and so on.

 

It's like an internet...wireless never beats cable - manual gearbox is always superior and simple, compared to attempts of bringing racing tech for common drivers. DSG has long way to go compared to manual unsynced gearbox, which is still used in racing. Sometimes with electronic, semi-auto shifting.

 

DSG has been designed for confused tuners. Simple things last forever.

brake, accelerator, left foot brake, right-foot accelerator, full gas, heavy braking and cornering....then repeat in every corner of steep alpine roads ;-)

Don't agree with that the DSG would only last 100k km.

 

There's a guy on here that recently sold his Octavia MK2 2.0 TDI PD140 DSG. It had way over 500,000km on the clock having had a new DMF and DSG oil changes. Not sure he even had the clutches changed or not.

 

He was using it as a Taxi.

 

It's still being driven around too.

Our Sept 2010 Octavia 1.6TDI/DSG has turned 80,000 miles.

I intend to keep the car regardless.

Still drives the same as when bought, in terms of transmission behavouir.

I believe the DSG tech is now "old school" enough as to be understood and economically fixable by an independant.

Ditto for the much maligned DPF.

Fingers crossed.

Mileage doesn't matter. It is quantity of shifting.

 

Fabia 1.4TDi, light car - a clutch lasts about 200k km.

 

It is possible if car has driven only long trips with little shifting.
