Octavia RS vs Golf GTD effective weight and performances

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm proud to drive a brand new Octavia RS TDI manual Estate. I'm curious to know the effective weight and performances differences between our RS TDI and the GOLF GTD 184.  VW claim 1377kg, skoda claim 1482 kg. My point of view is that the effective difference is no more than 50kg.

From Zeperfs it seems that the GOLF is heavier.

If someone has others data like 0-60, 0-100, top speed it would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Umberto

Octavia has longer wheelbase and more hanging out the back. It is a much bigger car so must be heavier.

Maybe the Golf 1511 kg upper weight is 4wd option?

No the GTD is front wheel drive.

Strange difference...

It depends what they are comparing, sometimes the weights include driver (75kg) and a full tank of fuel and all fluids, other times they are car only... this can make it confusing when comparing cars as there can be easily a 125kg difference between the two weighing systems.

I had a golf and Octavia Brochure and a GTI with performance pack 3dr, manual was actually slightly heavier than a petrol vRS estate manual. Not enough to make a difference either way IMO

From parkers.co.uk

Comparrisons based on manual gearboxes

Golf GTD 5 Dr 1377Kg, 0-60 7.3 seconds

Octavia VRS Estate TDI 1407Kg, 0-60 7.9 seconds

I Can't believe 30Kg = 0.6 seconds slower so either duff figures or mechanical differences (gear ratios?)

I have a feeling Skoda quote vehicle weight whereas VW include something like full fuel tank, 75kg driver and a certain weight in luggage.

The Skoda is a bigger car so like for like probably a little heavier than a Golf.

The 0-100 time quoted for the Octavia is a little unrealistic though, id say its probably 7.7/7.8 in reality, not the 8.1 quoted. Will be a split or two behind the Golf due to the weight difference but they arent that mechanically different to warrant a 0.6 sec difference.

I have not driven the Golf GTD but I have a VRS TSI and have driven a Golf GTI 7 PP with bhp more serval times. Overall performance feels extremely similar and I doubt anyone would really notice the difference without a stopwatch. The biggest difference between the two (TSI's) was with handling, the Golf feeling noticeably more nimble. I think engine performance between the GTD and VRS TDI will be much of a muchness.

Seeing them side by side I can believe as well than the difference is only 30kg. Octavia looks huge compared to golf.

Most of the weight is in the frame, engine etc... the panels themselves don't add a huge amount of extra weight. Also the Golf has more soundproofing etc which adds a bit more weight to it.

Also remember that the Octavia body panels are Coke-can thick to reduce weight (and save costs). Golf doors feel less flexible, but that could just be because the doors and panels are smaller.

The panels are very thin on the Octavia, although possibly they just appear that way due to the size of them. Many times when cleaning I've had the roof bend in from even slightly pressure.

Interior trim is likely heavier on the Golf. Just compare the boot floor, carpet, door bins, seats and trim materials. I love my Octy, but the golf feels more solid. The Octy may be the much bigger car but weight difference will be minimal.

It does that in many modern cars. The roof on my Volvo makes a horrible clunk when you wash it.

Modern cars are not built the way they used to be. I used to play street football against my dad's cars using them as goal posts. I wouldn't dare do that with a modern motor.

The inclusion of door bars and many other safety features have made cars much safer, but manuafactures have used the improved frame rigidity to decrease panel thickness and weight.

I agree, they`re built better. What would you rather have a crash in, a mk2 escort or a skoda fabia? I very much doubt the steel is any thicker from one car to the next but the amount of soundproofing stuck to it and the size of the panel will make the greatest difference. I once remember reading some bull about how RS turbo steel was better quality that the 1.3L was!

If weight difference is only 30kg then golf soundproofing/build quality must be much better that I hoped for. I don't own a golf 7 so I cant comment of that.

Soundproofing is very good on the golf................... :D

I keep adding weight to mine tho with OEM+ mods....................

Difference in performance isn't just a function of weight, power and gearing, but also aerodynamics (which is why Fabia vRS has a faster 0-60 time, but slower top speed, than the estate version).
