Black marks on wheels

Featured Replies

Hi all

I purchased myself a set of 17" spiders last year from somebody who had just had them freshly refurbed and powdercoated, but they decided he didn't want them anymore.

Anyway, they've been on since May 2014, and throughout the summer they remained spotless! Considering they were freshly refurbed I made an effort to keep them clean, applying Poorboys wheel sealant evey couple of weeks and using Iron X every couple of months to decontaminate them.

Even now throughout the winter months I've made sure to keep them clean and sealed. But after yesterdays wash, there have appeared some horrible black marks in the edges of the spoked sections on all of the wheels!

I've tried all sorts to try and remove them (Iron X, Autosmart Tardis, APC) but they are properly stained in!! Has anyone experienced anything like this before, and if so any tips to try and get rid of them?

Claying may help, I'm surprised Iron-X & Tardis have not made any difference. Try them again & agitate the are with a brush or an old toothbrush.

I had some similar marks on the fronts on my Passat when I got it. Turned out to be iron from the brakes and ironx would go purple on it but not really remove it. It appeared to be burnt into the clear. I spent a whole afternoon reapplying ironx and it did get rid of it but left the paint pitted where they were. The marks on mine were much worse than yours though and had started to go brown

As suggested by Jules, its burnt on brake dust

It will need brushing with a firm bristled brush..Toothbrushes are good for this...Honest!!

Use The Iron X again and brush it in..You may have to do it a few times

Finally, some polish on another brush will finish the area nicely....and wipe clean..reapply a wheel sealant to finish

That should do it..It will take time though

Good luck

i had a not too dissimilar issue last year, went through a couple of steps and ended up shifting it with a brake dust remover and srp.  like with your the difficulty was getting right into the angel.

thread is here if you want a read.  http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/327087-stain-on-wheels-how-do-i-get-rid/

The tool doesnt feel quite as harsh as it looks, but toothbrush and clay would be less aggressive options to try first though mind.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I guess i'll have to try again with the Iron X but with a toothbrush this time.

I've got a collection of Menzerna polish compounds that came with my DA polisher of which I tried the 400 compound on a cloth; but again it didn't do very much if anything at all...

I have to say, the surface finish of the wheels (especially in the edges) is quite coarse (perhaps a poor restoration job?) I'm guessing this might aid in dirt getting stuck to the wheel?

Just highly annoying when I try my best to keep them looking nice and protected, and then this to happen out of the blue within a few days of them being spotless!

To be fair..That doesnt look like a few days of use since they were spotless

Could you have missed it?

It looks burnt on from being there for a long time

I had similar on some old alloys of mine and got rid of nearly all of it with some clay and a lot of persistence!

Nope, every Monday is car wash day, rain or shine! :)

My typical procedure for wheels is spray with hose, spray on APC - leave for a couple of minutes and agitate with detailing brush. Usually once a month I'll use Iron X, and every 2 weeks I'll seal with poorboys wheel seal.

I use the same procedure on my dads Passat (his only gets a clean every couple of weeks though) which covers over 40k miles a year, and his wheels haven't got a single black mark on them! Which makes me wonder if the surface finish is perhaps what's causing the stain to remain?

Strange one then :(
