Strangle Handling!

Featured Replies

Ill try and explain this as best as i can its quite hard to explain in words!

When driving at high speed of 50mph+ the car is quite hard to keel in a straight line and i find myself adjusting my steering wheel constantly. It feels as if the camber isnt solid and asif the wheels are going from / position to \ position when driving making it feel like a plate ontop of a ball leaning from side to side! ... it a very wierd drive and i havent seen it before.

So far it has been slightly modified but it has also had a few new suspension parts when it got put on coils, list as follows;

Prosport Coilovers

Mondeo Drop Links

OEM Ball Joints

OEM Track Rod Ends

OEM Rear + Front Console Bushes

OEM Bottom Arms

Only thing i havent changed is the top mounts, i used my standard ones on the coils. Also my driveshaft joints have perrished and both shafts will need replacing shortly but would the driveshafts cause this?

Really confused so any guidence would be appreciated!

Hi.yea im trying to make sense of it

All tyres ok.pressures?. Antiroll bars.

Do you mean it feels like the car is swaying. Does it get worse the faster or slower you go.plus what does it feel like when cornering

Tbh i always think the more you modify it.the more you messing and having to correct issues. Imo

Assuming that the tyre pressures are correct and there is nothing loose, I would have the wheel alignment etc checked by someone who knows what they are doing.

I was following a lowered Polo along the A43 yesterday and it was crabbing, front and rear wheels not tracking properly.

Why didn't you go for Cupra console bushes?

Could it be as simple as you're riding in the truck grooves?

Tyre pressures are wierd also! they deflate really quickly but even with the correct pressures the problem still persists! Yeah it feels like its swaying - the same feeling as if a strong wind hit the car. Its worse at higher speeds and its corners fine no issues at all. The antiroll bar - When fitting the new bushes and coils the antrollbar had to be movedso therefore i undone the bush housing. Could i have not put the bushes back together correctly?

Yeah the allignment is out mate but not by much i beleive, just by feel - would this cause the 'swaying' problem? My tracking will be getting done soon as im due new tyres!

I couldnt get any cupra bushes in Hartlepool for some reason i tried everywhere and no one had them in stock or when giving the part number they were coming up with the standard VRS ones whch was very strange! So i needed them in time for my MOT free retest and due to time restrictions at work so i had to sacrafise but im gunna take them out - probably in the summer as its a proper pain in the arse job!

What do you mean?

@aaronjeff

Think runningstrong means when on different roads like ****ty a or b roads. Where trucks have mean they can cause slight grooves in road due to there weight

Its quite common on the roads around cambridgeshire. Anyways when driving you can feel like your tramline 1 min then the next on the sea lol

I would say doublecheck everything youve moved and all bolts tight etc?.

Also my tyres are set at 34psi. So if either of front tyres have lose air i can feel the sway your referring too.

Hope you get sorted

I see! Nah man this is any road weather its a, b or for example the M1/M6 - even when i have the tyre pressure upto 34PSI it still does the same! Quite anoying actually. It makes the car less 'easy' to drive. Keeps me on the ball though haha!

Think i might get a whiteline RARB shortly aswell so hopefully a RARB and polybush the FARB should transform the car but id like to get this fixed first to solve the problem rather than avoid it.

Could it possibly be really worn wheel bearings? it dooesnt show signs of wheel bearings yet but i havent had it up on a jack to check it and i imagine they will be next inline to go since the CV joints have been bust for a while now? :|

Jack it up and grasp each wheel and rock it side-to-side/top-to-bottom to see if there's any play in the bearings. If there is no play and they don't whine/rumble, you're good.

By the way, there are plenty of Cupra console bushes on ebay.

Firstly, DO NOT fit an extra ARB until you've got the handling sorted. It's odds-on that you'll either confuse the situation further or at best mask the real issue a bit.

Secondly, if you're losing tyre pressure regularly/fastish, suspect tyres not seating on the beads properly. You can self-diagnose by taking a wheel off, lying it on something genuinely level and putting some water in the bead-rim joint, and looking for air bubbles, or even using a tank like tyre fitters do when looking for this issue.

Thirdly, just why did you dismantle the ARB mounts? If you discoonect both droplinks then the FARB is free to rotate in the mounts between where it hits stuff each end of the travel.

I'm not clear on what the problem actually is, but am hoping to at least give you some useful advice.

Get the wheels aligned, and rule that out.

My car drove like **** when I changed the suspension, got the tracking done and it was lovely.

Im now starting to wonder have your alloys been hit ie kirbed??. Cos like being on a bike you would notice if the tyres were buckled. Get them off and roll them see what happens . Ive never had a wheel bearing ever make my cars sway. When driving along at pure straight road like a motorway does it drift to the verge drastically?. If you find out what the problem is please share on here

If the tyre pressures are going down, your either have a puncture or the wheel coating is lifting off in the area of the tyre bead.  A common VAG issue!

Had this with my vRS.  You can either have the tyres removed, have the rim area cleaed up and refitted with a different tyre soap.  There is one that will seal even corroded wheels.

Alternatively have the rims refurbished.  A bit expensive though.

If the pressures are low the car will not handle properly.
