When is a company car not a company car?

Featured Replies

Your records would prove nothing.

Even stopping to buy a packet of sweets or cigarettes or even buying your lunch during your "work" journey in that car means you have used it for PERSONAL purposes, and it was therefore "AVAILABLE to be used".

When will people understand the Rules?

There is a difference between having a car for personal use and having fuel for personal use, thats why they are split on your tax code..

I don't know, when will people understand the rules...

I would lose money selling it.

Putting aside the "I like my car" argument (which is perfectly acceptable) and while  in this may be correct if you are still paying your car off, I sometime fail to see the logic in the "lose money"  argument - firstly the car is going to continue to depreciate and and will therefore be worth more than at any time in the future. So the longer you keep it the more you will lose.

Secondly, you may have paid £8000,  think it is worth £5000 (simply and example), but if the market value is actually £4000, then surely you are better with £4000 in your pocket than an ever depreciating asset sitting on the driveway?

I see what you mean but I don't know how long I would be in this job. Remember now that you can be sacked without any reason whatsoever in the first two years (thanks Tories), so if I lost the job, I'd have to buy another car. That's what I mean by losing money. Yes, I might get £x for it if I sold it privately, but it's worth far more to me that that.

fair point, can't argue with individual circumstances
