The Wheel Specialist

Featured Replies

Anyone use The Wheel Specialist? Did a quote for 4 wheels to be stripped and refurbed in smoked chrome and received a quote for £410 ish for all 4.

Got another email back today with a revised quote with a large discounted price of £270.  Are they any good? Is the discount just trying to get my custom?  Even £270 seems steep?

Thanks.

I cant fault the service and job they do

That looks great! My wheels are really bad, but £270 is a lot to spend on cosmetics when saving for a house deposit...

Maybe treat myself in the summer, when I'm less likely to slide into a curb :D

Had a set of my old mazda 3 mps wheels done. Best company in my opinion. Only paid 165 for all 4 in smoked chrome due to my company using them alot.

Worth an email to see if I can't wangle more discount?  Drop the wax and do it myself?

This is the discounted price I got:

Seems a very high price, you should easily be able to wangle yourself discount IMO.

Any sites you recommend I can use to use as a price match example?

When Skoda refused to replace my delaminating Proteus alloys on my Scout, I used the Wheel Specialist near East Kilbride (strangely it's classed as Glasgow South!). Long story short, it took nearly 10 days for them to complete the work; they ran out of an acid they required, they weren't happy with the first attempt, and to be honest, initially I wasn't 100% happy with the final finish. It was supposed to be a matt gunmetal finish, Audi A5 style, but came out more a purple hued rough fineish, which I actually quite like. They also lost my four wheel covers.

I wasn't the only disatisfied customer that day, they managed to shatter the wheel on a 1950's/1960's Jaguar, that, according to the receptionist, was so rare that even if they found a replacement, it was going to cost a few thousand plus.

Rare

I know a few people who have used my local 'Wheel Specialist' (Leeds)

Nothing but praise and very happy

I used the one in Swindon (no longer trading) and they were very good

I always use the Wheel Specialist (Brian @ Leeds/Garforth) - and always demand a discount after they first quote.

Worth the money though and the refurb's on my last 3 cars have been spot on and great quality/finish.

Long before any companies were around doing this, we would just clean them, mask and spray.  In the 70's lots of wheels were two tone (think Rostyle), I did that by hand.  I found an ebony or charcoal looked better than straight black.

We even tried powdercoating, but should it get curbed, then it's hard to match up.

Point is why pay £££ for something you could do yourself for less than £20 over a weekend?

Because they are powdercoated and better than new

A Rattle Can cannot offer the same job or level of finish

As for not matching after powdercoating...They would redo it and it would be the same as the others

Expensive..Yes

But you get what you pay for

But it still gets dirty and chipped as much as any other finish.  I did use proper spraying equipment btw.

I can get a decent finish with a rattle can, its not hard, and it is only a wheel...

On a car.  To drive around in.  On roads.  In rain, mud, snow and slush.  It will get dirty.

WHEN it gets chipped, a bit of masking, a quick blow in, and jobs done.  No heartache.

Hi all.

I'm back to get an update on this.  I held off booking anything as I've just come back from an 800 mile road trip around London.  My wheels are shockingly bad.  I'm trying to decide whether it's worth spending the almost £300 refurbishing them, or just buying a different set of rims?

Just been to a local garage.  They quoted me £65 per wheel for typical silver/black/grey etc, but wanted £75 per wheel for shadow chrome or the likes.  Is this the going rate or is it a little pricey?

Whilst I was there, I also asked about getting the bumper resprayed. Naturally they're concerned about it not matching so they said they could do the bonnet, bumper and first half of the wings for £380. Again, is that a good price?

I've just had my Neptune's done by The Wheel Specialists in Burton on Trent. The cost for all five was £400 and I am very pleased with them. I dropped the car off at 08:00 and the car was ready to collect by 15:30. I had previously had the wheels painted by a man in a van based in Northampton and whilst they looked good when first done, the finish was not very durable, chipped easily and bubbled up after a year. I paid him £55 per wheel as a cash job and I would have been better off having them powder coated in the first place.

All I would say is that if you make a habit of parking too close to the kerb and scraping your wheels, a rattle can might be best, but if you are proud of your wheels and look after them, do the job once and do it properly.

As ChrisRS said in an earlier post, you get what you pay for.

Wheel specialist for me two, Leeds branch , 280 , you paid way too much mouldy, better than new after, I had smoked chrome on my Octavia vRS 8 years ago ,and the price was and is the same now when I had my omanyts done

Can I be cheeky and ask if you have any pics please? I really can't decided between standard silver or smoked/shadow chrome.

Thee are some pictures on their website...mine were Black Chrome...Pictures above

My mate got the alloys on his RCZ (no, he's not a hairdresser :D...) done there and seemed quite happy. I might have used them myself but I'd already had my wheels refurbished (Skoda also knocked me back) at Powdertec in Kinning Park - I'd used them for my MKI vRS and they're handy for my work.

I thought the same thing myself about 'Glasgow South' and 'Glasgow North' (Cumbernauld) - neither of which are actually in Glasgow!

I had my 18" neptune alloys done by the birmingham branch. The coating was really good. However 15 momths on they have gone from black gloss to faded black satin. Wouldnt have them done again

Did you apply sealant or wheel wax?

How often did you clean them?
