Replacing headunit with Amundsen+, GPS Antenna placement

Featured Replies

As of a few weeks ago I'm the proud owner of a 2007 2.0TDi L&K Occy Estate. Very happy apart from the dodgy turbo that keeps dropping me into limp mode but that's a dealer / warranty problem for another time...

Assuming that *minor* detail gets fixed I'm planning to replace the Stream Mp3 headunit with an Amundsen+ to get Nav and bluetooth. I've been lurking for a few weeks and am happy with most of the process but am not sure where the GPS antenna is best placed? Is there a specific stock location?

Other than that I've got:

Remove old head unit

Fit microphone to courtesy light module and run cable

Fit GPS antenna

Fit new headunit

Find someone with VCDS cable to tell the car about its new abilities.

What have I missed? Any pitfalls from someone that's done this before?

Sounds about right. And it's pretty straightforward.

I'd put the GPS antenna up by the front passenger grab handle. Remove the glovebox & A-pillar trim to do it.

I found reception to be more reliable up there than behind the headunit.

With the Amundsen+ only ones with a proper MAC address on the label have BT built in. Check carefully before purchase.

Might also need to replace the CAN gateway to avoid battery drain, hopefully someone else can confirm if the Amundsen causes this, it is an issue with most other more modern headunits.

I've not heard of an Anundsen causing battery drain. But I'm not saying it won't.

If it's a late 2007 Octavia it should be OK. Best get the car scanned to see what CAN gateway you have fitted first.

So have my hands on VCDS and an Amundsen+ with bluetooth.

My CAN gateway is a version K with software revision 0021. I know that this is one known to have problems with people installing Columbus' but does the problem occur with Amundsens?

Keen to know before I give myself a nasty surprise the next morning!

I'm also struggling to get the rest of the car to know the Amunsden+ is there. I've enabled 37-Navigation and 77-Telephone modules on the gateway with VCDS and factory rest the maxidot.

I think I'm right in saying that the MFSW I have might not work with an Amundsen? The maxidot should  though.

Any pointers gratefully received!

As its a pre FL I dont believe the maxidot will work with it either. I am not sure about battery drain either sorry.

Amundsen should be okay for battery drain, but Amundsen + will cause problems I'm afraid.

That's interesting mate, first time I have heard anything definitive on the Amundsen(+) and battery drain. Why is there a difference, is it the bluetooth functionality?

Despite looking exactly the same, the units are very different inside. Only the faceplate is the same really. So the reason is probably because they're very different units.

For the OPs benefit as much as mine is this solved by updating the gateway? And I reckon this might also help, while also solving the maxidot and MFSW issues.

It has allowed me to put a newer BT unit in my pre FL to the point it integrates with the older pre FL maxidot. It works by converting the older DDP protocol signal to the newer BAP protocol.

This one looked interesting. So no need for a upgraded CAN Gateway? And do you need to go through VCDS?

I didnt change any coding apart from for the new bluetooth module it allowed me to fit. However my car was unaffected by battery drain as it was a Columbus unit in a 2008. I bought it for the protocol conversion.

Thanks all for advice and knowledge.

So if I've understood this correctly that unit plugs into the gateway and does the protocol translation between the newer head-unit and the older MSFW / Maxidot. (and solves the battery drain issue).

The problem at the moment is that poking with VCDS enables the telephone and nav modules but they then throw an error. Presumably that's because they're talking DDP while the HU is talking BAP?

It looks to my inexpert eye that that unit would solve all the niggles I'm having. Would it matter that the BT module in integrated into the HU, I'm thinking not but...

Your understanding is as mine. The only thing I am not entirely sure about is the integrated BT but I imagine it would also work. Its a bit of a gamble given the cost but as I say I have one and it has worked for me in allowing a BAP only BT module to work in a pre FL car.

What I do know is the manufacturers are responsive to both questions on their forum and issues after sales. So I would suggest asking them first there (http://www.auto-polar.com/forum/). They helped with a few issues after my install there too (my handle is the same on there amd might see some of my correspondence).
