Is Castrol Magnatec oil any good?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Went for the weekly slog round ASDA with the misus for the food shopping, when i see Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 (4litres) on offer for £20. just about the time i was going to service the car. Anyone used Magnatec? is it any good?

Cheers

It's perfectly fine for your car, you need 3.5 litres. It's oil.

haha, i know its the right spec for my car, just wondering if its any better than say halfrauds discount stuff.

Depends, compare apples with apples, are they both fully or semi-synthetic?

Yeh both fully synthetic, to be honest im probs going to buy the castrol, as dont particually trust halfords with anything

Fairynuff, it'll be made by an oil company just like castrol, not by Halfrauds.

haha true true, ever since the great halford advice i had one day i do try and avoid anything from there. they once insisted that a round air filter was correct for my car even after they saw my current one wasnt and that it was seating in the housing which isnt round, all because there computer told them that!! idiots

Well they pay peanuts so they get monkeys.

Nope, you're right, it's just oil.

Magnatec I'm sure is very good stuff. It should protect your engine better then normal oils on 'cold starts'. However I stumbled this interesting comment on one forum.

I'm an engine development engineer @ a large OEM

Magnatec is supposedly very good, when testing at Cambridge uni the only way of removing the 'magnatec' coating was to sand it off...no chemical solvents would touch it.

I have no idea how true it is or weather it's just a scare story.

Spend that little bit more a get their decent oil, Castrol Edge :)

It's not true, Castrol have had to remove their 'coating' claims in the USA because they contravened advertising standards, it's just a decent oil, nothing magical or special about it.

I'd second the halfords comment went for oil other month, their guide told me to get the wrong one (castrol) quick Google of this site confirmed my suspicions and saved me a fiver

Been using Castrol Magnatec 5W-40 since I got her one year ago.

Results: very good - did not pinch the oil, did not have to top up at all.

Conclusion: Saturday we're changing the oil again, Castrol Magnatec 5W-40 is my choice (also the recommendation from my local Skoda dealer).

tl;dr

It's oil, and his car hasn't blown up because it's working as intended.

Fine then... use tractor oil :D

I'm kidding, of course. Oil is indeed oil - if it's the right specification for the car and changed when it should be changed, it's all good.

Also, on an off-topic note, I was using Elf 15W-40 in my old car (an Oltcit Club 11 - AKA Citroen Axel) and it was doing a good job as well.

It is a good oil, and if I'm not wrong, it has one which has the best price compaired with the offered (promissed) specs. I'm on it since October 2014 and for about 2000miles. I'm thinking to replace it once the winter will be gone (at about 6months) and I will go back to Liqui Molly MOS2. It's ok-ish...but my engine is about 112.000miles and it does deserve a little special care (even if it's an antique 1.4mpi 8v). I don't really like the how my engine sounds now and I blame the oil.

To be realist, at this moment, about all the full synth oils on the market do have about the same specs, they do have a decent amount of cleaning stuff in them and they do work pretty well under all temps and might work well for about 12.000miles. If it's replaced along with the filter at 6 months or 6000miles, everything will be just fine.
