Is it possible to see if the cars trip-meter is altered?

I just bought a 16V with low mileage and just want to make sure it

Perhaps the emissions are not good enough to meet the legal requirements in Sweden, not sure though?

Apparently once you have programmed the km/miles (km in Sweden) and set the value over a certain one (think it was 15 miles, dunno if it's 15 km as it could just be the value) it prevents altering.

The only way to clock it after that (apparently ;)) is to get new clocks.

Ok. Still, everybody else seems possible to program? So if you alter a Mercedes, BWM or a Porsche, a Skoda should not be a problem?

This is probably not an issue with my car, but it's pretty frustrating to look at cars in Germany and assume they are all altered if they not say 1 billion km...

I think the answer is that Joe Average cannot do it - and definitely not with VAG-COM software. Also it is an offence to 'clock' a car in this country too. Does the overall condition of your car - and the service record - tie in with the recorded mileage? If so stop worrying and enjoy it. :)

Joe Average can do it ;) All you need is a laptop, an OBD-II cable and the right software .... apparently! It is only an offence to advertise the car as having a different mileage to its actual mileage, "mileage-adjustment" itself is perfectly legal and your local yellow pages (or Swedish equivalent) probably has a number of these companies listed :D

I have indeed just found software advertised for just

That means the only real way to check is to go over the cars history with a fine tooth comb. Check service book, and any other documents with mileage on them to see if they are consistent. Check pedal rubbers for wear etc..

Surely your pedal rubber will wear quicker if you have heavy feet?

Ok. Thank you all for the input! I'm pretty sure my car is ok. Checked out the previous owner and he is very old. So It's pretty solid! Maybe the clutch will die soon though ;)
