Next phone, Note 4 or Nexus 6

Featured Replies

As per title really. Narrowed it down to two phones, size a non issue as I've been living with a note for ages. Anyone using either got any feedback?

The nexus will have vanilla android, so no more horrid wiz touch interface. It's more powerful as well.

But if you're used to using the S pen a lot, might be worth sticking with a note.

For reviews, tech radar usually have good roundups and videos.

The stock android is a big part of the appeal. I use a Nexus 10, really like it, so having the same OS will be good. I have changed the nature of my phone use these days, it is less a productivity tool, so don't really think I will use the abilities of a Note 4. Heavily leaning towards a Nexus 6 at the moment.

Not seen one in the flesh, but I think over 5" is just too big for a phone.

I've always liked the big phones, had the original big screen phone, the Dell Streak, now a Note, neither have been too big, I just got quickly used to the size. With a 6" screen, the Nexus is bigger again, but should get used to it.

Touchwiz is a non issue imho as if it really annoys you, put a launcher on it

Deed is done, Nexus 6 charging, will report once up and running.

Assume you got one from Carphone warehouse? What size?

Yep, went 32GB at £459. Seriously considered 64GB, but I rarely use the phone for music, so will only load a few gigs.

Well so far, it is most excellent! Screen is the best I have ever seen on a handheld device, everything works very quickly and Android 5 is neat and tidy to use. Quite liking 4g too. It would appear that EE are reserving performance for their 4gv customers at the expense of their 3g users. Areas where I got painfully slow, if ever, page loads are now instantaneous. Coverage generally is better too.

Funny thing is, EE, being retards, would not allow me to move from one tariff set to another, so I ended up going to the retention department to get a PAC code, they then offered me a deal £8 per month cheaper than the tariff I was trying to swap to. Numpties, but I'm not complaining.

That's very cheap!

Aren't the Facebook and Mozilla handsets Ubuntu?

Already did. It's spot on.

Likely canceled before launch?

The only 'Facebook' phone I'm aware of was one that Facebook launched with HTC, it was largely a standard Android phone that used a Facebook launcher.  It didn't do well and I think the idea was mostly scrapped with some of the ideas that people did like such as chat heads getting integrated into other facebook applications.

Firefox OS is not based on Ubuntu or any other mainstream Linux distribution I'm aware of.

The Ubuntu phone looks interesting but I'm quite keen on trying Sailfish which is produced by a company consisting of employees who had previously worked on Nokia's Maemo OS and the Meego project.  I had the Nokia N900 a few years back which ran Maemo which was debian based, the device worked well as a phone but at the same time if you wanted to dive into the machinery of it and make changes with the command line you could but didn't have to (to root it you typed root from a command line!).  I liked a lot of what they did with the phone which felt more like a little computer and in particular their multitasking interface was particularly good and still makes others seem clumsy in comparison.  Sadly it never did well mainstream and it died off so I changed to Android, I'd quite like to try out Sailfish but not as my main phone, I see it's running on a Nexus 7 so that might be worth a shot.

John

i have bought every nexus handset since the original nexus one by htc

if you are into android nexus all the way

no more waiting for manufacturer and carrier to release os updates

nexus 6 is a big behemoth of a device but a few days you get used to it

my wife has all my hand me downs and the nexus 5 feels tiny when i pick it up

First nexus I had was the 10, so impressed by it that the 6 was highly likely to replace my ageing Note N7000. Have to say, the more I use the 6, the more I am impressed by it. Size is a non issue coming from the Note. A good case / pouch for it is the Mediadevil one. Little magnet switches the phone on as you take it from the pouch.

my only gripe with the 6 is when you go into apps the background is white

5.1 rolling out in the next few weeks aswell

hopefully that will sort out random restarts

and i do wish when it was locked volume buttons would be disabled

Have not had any random restarts yet. Touch wood.
