I am soo tempted

 

I've been saying for months that if a Coupe quattro 2.2 manual came up iin Tornado Red I'd buy it.

Then this morning this appeared:

SWMBO says I have to sell the Skoda if I want this. That's not happening.

Go for it. I'm part way through restoring a 1982. Mind out for rust in the boot floor and the bottom of the A pillars.

Yeah, buy it. Lovely looking cars and the noise of that 5 cylinder over 4000 revs. My dream car is still the original Ur Quattro preferably one of the final 20v versions in Tornado red obviously.

Have finance approved for a small loan. Not SWMBO approval though.

The UR turbo is my dream car also but they go for $40k.

You could also take the opportunity of getting a different 'newer model' at the same time Rob. One that was more amenable if you get my drift.  

I've been looking at older cars again despite being the same as you Rob and don't have the SWMBO seal of approval.

 

What's the state of older cars out there in terms of rust?  Do they use salt on the roads at all?

Great cars, my Dad had the UR Quattro before that one on a Y plate. Had the 2 pairs of small square headlights, bit less refined than that one. Let me drive it once, much fun, old Audis are great, plenty of character to go with the bombproof build.

Don't need to worry about rust with those anyway didn't they have the zinc coated body panels?

The one I had in the UK had some rust!! Sills were rotten, A pillars and roof. It had been abandoned in a barn. We don't generally salt the roads here. And he tells me it has no rust

Oh ok lol. Maybe it's from later years on certain panels, this one sounds good though. Buy it!

Waiting for a bit more info and some interior pics. I'm told if interior is worn out it's very costly to fix these days.

It does look brilliant on the outside.

Also it's on the South Island so I'll have to fly down to look. If I buy it it's a drive up on some awesome roads followed by a 3.5 hour ferry trip.

Yes check for rust mate who had his around 2002 he lost heaps on it and was very bad for rust , make sure you are buying the dream not a nightmare

You're talking yourself into this I can tell.  I do the same and in the end I'm convinced that there's no logical reason why I shouldn't buy whatever car it is.  That's why I ended up with the Vectra.  I'm now looking at another 106 Rallye again as my bloke brain & logic have got various reasons and justifications as to why it's a good idea.
