Daylight running lights

Featured Replies

What price would I expect to pay for installing daytime running light to my 07 plate Roomster2 ? Anyone know of anywhere near Adlington Lancashire (midway between Chorley and Bolton).

Why bother?  If you are concerned about your car being visible during daylight hours just drive with the headlamps on.

^^^^ This. I drive with dipped headlights all the time come rain or shine.

I sat my IAM test and had my sidelights on. When quizzed by the examiner as to why, I explained 'to be more visible'.

His response was, 'then make a bold statement, and use dipped headlights'. It kinda stuck with me.

Not really, some want to make there cars look more up to date, others don't. Just do what you feel like doing. There's no right or wrong way. (jonny5ive's is the cheapest).

Don`t be..reasonable question to ask..I had DRL on a Fabia estate I had some years ago, which is the same front of course as the Roomster..They were a liability tbh..other motorists thought it was the fog lights that had been left on and yelled at you accordingly....Unless they were LED and situated in the headlight area I wouldnt bother. The output isnt very good and they are too low down..Just put the headlights on, much better  :sun:

My 63 plate 1.2 tsi does not have them. I find running lights intimidating when I am followed by cars with them. I cannot see the purpose of them as the Highway code advises dipped headlights in poor visibility. The advantage of the LED running lights is that they are less likely to affect fuel consumption than headlights.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I can't see headlights using up all that much fuel? I don't see a difference in my mpg driving in daytime vs night.

Grafitti has a valid point, if the engine is running and revolving the alternator how can using power make the engine use more fuel? It's something I've heard before but I cannot see how it would affect fuel, if it would I would have my alternator bearings lubricated every service.

If the head light amps are 50 Watts each (for example) the additional 100 Watts needs to come from somewhere in the system and that will ultimately be from the engine. In other words if the alternator is rotating with no electrical load on it the engine will see little or no load.

Well I guess I'm wrong. Although it is difficult to figure out the exact amount - I've been searching online and found many debates on the subject. The most sensible calculation I could find though equated 2x55w bulbs with a reduction in economy of a quarter of a percent. So I still don't think it's a practical issue in real world application. For me with an average of 55mpg that would reduce it to 54.85 mpg , which would also explain why I haven't seen a measurable difference
