ABS Sensor, Loom or Teves MK60 ESP/ABS Pump Problems.

Featured Replies

Am I right in thinking that the Teves ESP pump problem usually affects cars after 2007, or were they all the same right from the start of the mk2 Octavia?

I had these light up last night. :(

Mine is a 2005 DSG Combi.

Drove home from work as normal. Parked for 20 minutes. 500 yards down the road they all light up, and they've not gone out since.

They're on as soon as you turn the ignition on.

I've run a scan with my Torque/BT adapter and it had no fault codes logged.

Hopefully I'll be able to run a full VCDS scan this weekend.

When the Teeves pump failed on my 2008 PD140 I only got the ESP light, not the ABS light.

My car doesn't have tyre pressure monitoring so won't have had that one anyway.

VCDS should reveal all.

Have you been stabbing the Maxidot with something!?

Maxidot is another issue entirely :)

Mine does have tyre pressure monitor.

I really hope this isn't the pump as it's the last thing I need at the minute.

I did have an advisory on the last MOT that one of the rear stone guards was deteriorated and I've heard them corroding can cause issues with the sensors or magnet rings.

If it was a sensor though, I'd expect it to not show until I start driving.

Hmmm.

I've looked at an old VCDS scan, and my ABS is as below:

Address 03: ABS Brakes

Labels: 1K0-907-379-MK60-F.lbl

Part No SW: 1K0 907 379 Q

HW: 1K0 907 379 Q

Component: ESP FRONT MK60

Revision: 00T12001

Coding: 0004738

According to this list below, mine isn't an affected part

I'm not a betting man but I'm having a tenner on a duff ABS sensor on the hub.

This has been reported before when the stone guard corrodes and somehow damages the sensor.

An overheating wheel bearing also had the same result.

If in the unlikely event it is the ABS pump there is a fix kit available now which is much cheaper than a new pump.

The sensor at that age is usully a rusted ring magnet in a hub (rear normally). I had both my rear hubs replaced for this but the lights would go out if you drove 100m at less than 30mph.

I've also had the teves and it had all three stuck on but the error was the usual G201.

Pump kit isn't the cost it once was but it's still a bit of a thump in the wallet.

Well I've scanned it with Brimma and it's not the pump. Phew :)

I'll jack it up tomorrow and have a look at the sensor and wiring on the wheel as it's short or open circuit.

Good old Brimma. :)

Scan results.

2 Faults Found: 00283 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Front Left (G47) 008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent 00283 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Front Left (G47) 012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit

May be I should be a betting man!

Glad its a relatively easy and low cost fix, at least compared to an ABS pump.

OEM the sensors are about 70 quid. But they can be had much cheaper if you risk a pattern part. Eurocarparts or eBay do them.

Do you have to set the air gap when replacing the sensors?

Get a real one. I had an ECP one and it went tits up in 6 months and I had to buy another anyway. They're not that much cheaper anywy

Ecp sell pagid or Bosch when I put in my reg.

About £1 difference between the two

Well bugger....

I jacked the car up, took the wheel off and unplugged the sensor to check and clean the connection.

I also disconnected the battery to try to see where the cable goes through the wing into the engine bay. Now I've a permanently illuminated orange pas light. :(

When you have driven a short distance then the PAS light will go out all by itself.

What's defined as a short distance?

I've probably done 10 miles since it happened and it's still on. It came on as soon as I turned on the ignition after putting everything back together. I also tried full lock to lock while stationary.

Right... I changed the sensor for a brand new one, and it's still got the one of the faults:

1 Fault Found:
00283 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Front Left  (G47)
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit

It comes back up as soon as I clear it.

I cannot reset my power steering as a result of the ABS showing a fault.

I pulled back the rubber boot on the sensor end of the cable and it doesn't look frayed or broken.

I measured the voltage across the two pins on the connector, and when you turn the ignition on, it starts around 6v, then steadily drops down to almost 0.

I measured the voltage on the right side connector, and that is 11.9v as soon as you turn the ignition on, and stays there.

I've found a replacement loom for the left side, but will this actually solve the issue? I'm assuming the loom is not broken, otherwise it would permanently be 0v?

I got the battery out with a view to taking the intake and battery tray off to look at the other end of the loom, but it started chucking it down so I gave up.

What could be the solution?

After further testing, the loom appears to be the issue.

I've got it booked in with an auto electrician for full diagnosis and fix as it's now beyond my diy skills

Got it fixed. ABS speed sensor cable between the sensor and body was broken, and had been previously repaired, obviously not very well.

Cost 70 including VAT, so not too bad.

Well....It seems that they didn't do a very good repair either as it's happened again.

It's booked back in for them to have another look on Monday.
I will not be happy if they ask me to pay again.

  • 1 year later...

Hi. What was the outcome of this? I currently am experiencing a similar issue. I replaced the sensor, but still registering as an electrical fault G47 front left sensor. I looked at the connections and the conditions of the wiring in the wires down to the wheel and all seem in good condition. This fault only reared its head after hitting a bump in the road... Where does the wire connect into the loom and what should I look out for? Have the car 2 years and this is the 1st issue I've had with it! (2011 2.0 tdi VRS 170)

I had the cable repaired properly and it hasn't been an issue since.

On first inspection the cable looked visually OK, but a continuity test revealed otherwise.

The wires are just taped in to the rest of tthe loom and go directly to the connector on the abs pump.
