Brake light switch

Featured Replies

Dear all,

I have found a good guide on the replacement of this switch however what I am unsure of is the type of switch I had, the type of switch I have purchased, and the correct setup/fitting.

I had the brown switch type fitted which can be seen below:

It has a plunger and what sounds like a ratchet mechanism on the plunger bit. This switch was not working when I removed it but have since completely bugared it whilst playing about trying to confirm how it works.

The switch I have ordered from ECP is below. Resonance I opted for this switch is that it looked more substantial and doesn't appear to have this rubbish ratchet design so possibly easy to install (I. e not having to mess about depressing the peddle etc).

Please would someone be kind enough to confirm the correct way to install the switch?

Does the switch need to be plugged in to the wiring loom connector when inserted and locked in to position or should it be installed and then plugged in? Or doesn't it matter? Do I need to mess about with any brake pedal positions when installing the switch I have ordered?

And help or advice very gratefully received!

Thanks in advance people!

That's the guide I downloaded and looked at yesterday. Just still wasn't sure which switch I had. I assumed the one with the "big top" is the black one from ECP? If you read that thread the same questions are asked over and over and I can't see any clear answer lol.

I bought mine from TPS. I assume if you go to euro car parts they will check which part is for your car?

I'm not in doubt that I've got the correct switch or not, it's whether or not the switch needs to be plugged in to the loom before fitting or once it is in place that is the main question. The only reason I'm asking is that it appears the switches are prone to breaking so it's a one shot fitment, if it doesn't go in right first time, it looks like a new switch :-(

Quick update chaps, don't waste your time with the cheap ECP crap. The quality of the connector is horrendous and if you look at it wrong it snaps! I tried two, both snapped, ECP refunded me for both. Went to TPS got the latest OEM part, great quality, no daft ratchet mechanism or setting up needed, slotted in and turned like butter. Job all sorted.

There is no issue as far as I know with fitting the wiring connector before or after fitting the switch to the bracket. I'd favour removing and fitting the wiring connector while the switch is free from the bracket as it makes life easier.

AshVrs makes a very good point, ie only buy the latest version from a VAG outlet - dealer or TPS.

Wasn't sure whether this had any effect on setting up the ratchet mechanism against the pedal that was all. I didn't know whether it had to be set before being connected to register the adjusted position (probably over thinking it to be fair).

Difference in part quality is night and day. There is definitely a reason why the ECP switch is half the price of the OEM one lol.

Ah so long since I've been on these forums.... (Work really taking it out of me). You've just saved me the hassle of bothering with ECP, thanks. I won't bother collecting my reservation now :D
