MKI or MKII Octavia?

I'm looking at buying an Octavia at the end of Feburary, but I'm faced with the choice of a 2002 MKI Octavia Laurin & Klement 1.9 Tdi 110 Bhp or 2004 MKII Octavia Elegance 1.9 Tdi. 

The MKI has a lower mileage than the MKII, they are the same distance away and the same price.

The car would spend 90-95% of the time on the motorway for comuting.

I like the look of the MKI, but would like to know if anyone has had experience with both as I'm wondering if there is a difference in economy since the MKII engine should be a bit more refined over the MKI if I'm not mistaken?

And is there anything to watch out for when buying a used example of either?
