can the 5 speed box be replaced for 6 speed?

Featured Replies

Evening

My pd 100 2004 is at the mechanics atm

As in need of gearbox replacement.

Hes said hes not a 100% sure if its cheaper to do a recon. Or if its possible to fit the 6speed out of vrs.

The car needs a new dmf whilst its out anyway.

But thought id ask on here to see if anyone knows if possible?

Thanks in advance

It is possible (most things are).

GFWC did it recently to his estate, I think it was found in the end that the vRS clocks were also needed (check out his build thread I think the info is there...) and then you're in to sorting out the immobilizer which is linked with the clocks.

Is it something your mechanic would want to undertake though? Unlikely.

Edit: I lied, its here: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/338513-speedo-not-working-on-6-speed-conversion-resolved/?p=4108926

And I think he used vRS shafts/hubs/brakes.

As above. I helped GFWC fit his 6 speed box. It's not as simple as it sounds. Quite a bit needs to be taken from a vrs to convert it to a 6 speed. I would go for a recon 5 speed if it was me.

Clutch

Flywheel

Shifter cables

Dash clocks

It's a complete ball ache, unless your planning to modify the car I wouldn't bother.

And if this ruggedly handsome chap thinks its too much hard work...

... it probably is!

That still makes me laugh!

Nice 1 guys

My box has been sticking in certain gears and whineing in 4th for several months. Ive been putting it off cos of the price

Until the weekend when something in box went BANG ****!!

My mech told me ages ago a friend of his strips down and recons in his sparetime for 400 hundred cash

So it looks like that might be the case and simply get dmf kit from either sachs or luk

The car has been mapped

But have no intention of doing anything else with it. I had a feeling there would be more to it than being straight forward

Didn't the PD100 have a SMF as standard? I'd stick with that personally... if the car was happy on a SMF and you were happy with it, why buy something that costs more and is more failure prone?

Well i thought it had smf but he tells me its dmf setup.

Im not sure now youve raised a good ? Aslong as get a clutch that lasts 3-5 years or longer and can handle that extra power

Cheers

The PD100 should have a smf. That's what George's one did have.

Price up some second hand gearboxes and go from there.

I had my gearbox fail on my PD100. I had a refurb box swapped in, new clutch and timing belt. Cost me £1300 :(

The timing belt was not related though surly? And that's £350ish on its own...

It's 100% a single mass flywheel on all of the pd100's

Pd105 is s DMF

Whilst it's out id reccommend fitting a VR6 clutch which is cheaper than the standard and a lot stronger.

3 piece kit from ECP £79

To swap a 5 speed box with anotber 5 speed box would be super easy. The 6 speed conversion is a right pain, and would be considerably more expensive if you were replacing stuff because the 5 speed is SMF it probably won't need changing, it can't go wrong.

Where as a DMF for 6 speed is around £200 on its own.

Not only that, as Dan mentioned above, you need to swap to VRS clocks to get the speedo to work, which is not very easy or cheap to do.

If you want to fit 6 speed I can go through what you need to do, but seriously ... Stick with 5 speed.

Fit a box from an tdi ATD mk4 golf, they have shorter ratios for better accel and round town driving, if you use the car for that, the 5 speed fabia tdi's should of had that box from factory as it would suit the car better

That all depends is the casings are the same for the gearbox mounts.

The golf box doesnt fit.

Never had a problem with the ratios on my PD100 Cordoba in town, always felt like it could have handled a 6th gear though. No idea if the Cordy had the same box as a Fabia though.

It's quite possible, as it's just a longer ibiza isn't it?

Yep. Same floor plan as a Fabia estate.

Oh I fort the golf box would fit never mind lol

Not saying the standard 5speed is a problem

quite a bit of differnce in the ratios between the fabia and golf pd100 ATD, my mrs pd100 golf has a real short box and makes driving around town real fun as it accelerates like a rocket due to shorter gears

Old trick I've seen a few people with pd150 arls fit the 100hp 5speed box and it's ratios are quite a bit shorter than the 6 for the bit more get up n go

Hi

Spoke to the garage today cos i needed to know full extent of damage. App as the input shaft sounds ****ed and its stiff getting in and out of 1st 2nd 4th and 5th

Its a case of a second hand gearbox ( cheapest route) or recon

The guy who does the gearboxs for the garage has told him to strip down and recon everything is getting for a poss 1800!!! Not worth it

So will be searching everywhere for low mileage one

Mechanic has told me its got the dmf in it atm. Which logbook states its the pd100 not 105

Ive no idea if this should be right or not.

The previous owner must of been told it needed dmf and got ripped off

Anyways if the smf will be stronger and take the extra 44bhp gain that ive got and is cheaper then win win

I know the labour to take out and fit another box and clutch will only be 3or 4hrs cos can be done in one go

Oh the joys lol

Right must getting looking cheers

What engine code is your car?

I really really don't think that you have a DMF in that box.

If you need a SMF you can have my old one for £20 and the clutch for £10 if you want it. Low mileage.

It will be an ATD engine code.

I think your right buddy as im 100% convinced its smf too

Where abouts do you live? How many miles had your smf and clutch done?

70k mate on standard 100Hp

And about 2k miles mapped.

There is no way that the SMF can fail so naturally it's in great condition, as is the clutch.

I'd sell you the box but that went to someone else on here!

You probably won't need a new flywheel as yours will be SMF and will be fine.
