Noisy Scout - should I be worried?

Featured Replies

Recently got myself a 58 plate Scout from a main dealer. Car has service history and seems well enough maintained. But on the road it makes a very audible 'drone' once I accelerate above c30/40ish and then it just stays there and is a bit intrusive. The work's Scout doesn't do it, which has me wondering if something's wrong. Before I go back to the garage I'd be interested in the thoughts of Forum members. Anyone experienced anything similar?

Check all the tyres for signs of wear.

Wheel alignment issues are very common on the Octavia.

I've not heard of saw toothing on models other than the vRS, the Scout has different rear suspension.

Agree with checking the tyres, uneven wear will be a give-away.

If not tyres then wheel bearings.

More worrying would be an issue with the rear diff. Is it a drone or a whine?

Either way, my 2008 Scout is silent, as is your works Scout too, taking it back to the dealers is a good idea, it is under warranty, make the most of it!

Please let us know how you get on...

Thanks guys. Should have said I don't think it's the tyres. First job when I got the car home was get a set of new tyres - the dealer had three different makes on it so I thought that could be an issue but it's the same with the four new ones. It's definitely a drone rather than a whine. I think a trip to the dealer will be next step.

My guess would be a duff wheel bearing then.

At least if it is more serious and is something to do with the transmission / Haldex you are covered.

Make sure the Haldex oil has been changed every 40,000 miles. This is often overlooked, even by main dealers on the Scout.

Thanks silver1011. Dealer seemed unsure about the haldex oil change at 40k so they did one for me prior to purchase (70k) as I specifically asked about it (thanks to info on here). A wheel bearing sounds like the lesser of the two evils so fingers crossed it could just be that. As the car was sold to me making the noise I'll expect that under warranty too!

Good luck, fingers crossed for a quick and easy fix!

I've just replaced a rear wheel bearing on my Scout - aware of a drone for a few days and when I jacked it up to check I thought the wheel was loose there was so much movement. The bearing was absolutely gubbed but never a hint of the usual bearing whine you usually get when they fail.

Getting the bearing separated from the hub carrier was a real pain - one of the splined bolts stripped and had to drill it out and then getting them apart required some serious beating because of the corrosion.  Once cleaned up reassembly was simple.

Good news! Garage have just advised that the problem was a wheel bearing and the even better news is they're sorting it under warranty. What's strange is that this one was really noisy - very audible drone - but last week I needed a new one on the vRS to get it through MoT and there had been no noise at all from that one.

It can vary by model and level of failure.

Plus whether it's the front or back etc.

We had one on the front go on our old Pug 306. Hadn't noticed it tbh.

But then one of the rears failed and it was like sitting on a washing machine! lol

Good result! Enjoy the Scout. Great cars!
