pi** poor fabia greenline 2 mpg...any ideas?

Featured Replies

Having read some posts on here my GL2 is clearly underperformed. It is on a 12 plate with 20k on the clock. On mixed driving I am seeing as low as 43mpg for the tank and have never seen more than 54mpg when on a good run, and it doesn't matter how I drive!!! I knew I wouldn't get the claimed mpg, anyone got any ideas/tips???

Is this a 1.2 tdi 3 cylinder

My mpg dipped when I had a failed exhaust temp sensor. I only got a warning light when I was doing a motorway trip and the light was gone when ignition was turned off and on.

Yes it's the 1.2tdi 3 cylinder and is an estate. No lights on and recently serviced at main dealer.

Hi Phil, used the dash guide for changing gear, let the turbo kick in and also revved it...makes no difference. Great video....more like 400 miles per tank, 460 if I am lucky!!!!!

My 1.6TDI 105 averages mid to high 40s on a kickaround and depending on style, much higher on the motorway. I've seen as low as 48MPG on a run, and as high as 72MPG. Those are figures backed up by fuelling, not with the dash readout.

I know you dabbed on this in your last post, but with the CR engines you really do have to drive them more like a petrol. Rev them a little, use that turbo it's what it's designed for. Also, the dash readouts can be quite far off the reality, have you checked the MPG with how much fuel you've used? (brim the tank, go for a run, brim it afterwards, work out MPG)?

Are all your tyres at the correct pressures? Are you running with the AC constantly on? Are you doing short journeys where the engine oil can't warm up properly?

So many things can affect MPG!

Thanks for that, my readings are brim to brim. Check my tyres weekly and don't use air con a great deal. Will use that turbo a bit more and see. Otherwise it may not last much longer!

Similarly unimpressed with my mpg.

Different gearing from the 1.4 TDI Polo it replaced meant that I wasn't 'driving it right' for quite some time.

Tip which slightly improved my mpg was:

Speed in the 30's - use 3rd

Speed in the 40-50's - use 4th

Speed >60 - use 5th

Don't be in a hurry to change up a gear as you accelerate as the engine just labours and uses more fuel.

I've started using premium diesel every 4th fuel, (I only ever put £20 a time in - as with airlines I avoid carrying excess fuel as that simply uses fuel, so my tank never exceeds half-full), so that keeps the engine cleaner and improves mpg.

On a good run, no wind, dry road, I get low 60's on my 50 mile commute, of which 2/3 is motorway. (I also changed the tyres from the OEM Dunlops to Vredestein Quatrac Lite all-season, but that didn't affect mpg much).

Still nowhere near what Skoda claim you can get, so I won't pay the premium for a Greenline ever again.

Thanks rab-k like the advice on the gearing. Knew I wasn't going to get what skoda said, but expected far more than I am getting. annoying thing is I purposely didn't drive the vrs estate sat next to it....lesson learnt for future!!!

I have seen 90+mpg on the trip meter on several 180mile runs (kent to brum)

so the figure is achievable on "certain" runs, but normal run of the mill driving

round normal runs I achieve low / mid 60's, normally getting 550-600 miles to a tank

I usually look at a sort of mid point between urban and combined as a realistic figure for day to day economy

but your figures are very low, the modern CR diesels do seem to require different driving more like a petrol compared to older pre-CR engines

Update - brim to brim reading at latest fill up....45.3mpg. That includes motorway and A road ie mixed driving. An email to skoda methinks.

I used to travel from Swindon to Uxbridge on a daily basis, by M4 and A/B roads (about (65 miles) and I'd average 68mpg (measured using Fuelly) the best I ever achieved was 72mpg.

I've now changed Jobs and Drive to Witney each day, all on A roads (about 26 miles) and I've been averaging 60mpg (again using Fuelly) the best being 62mpg (worst 56mpg)

I deffo think you've got a problem there dude!! email to Skoda methinks!!

Quick response from skoda....with a link to what cars guide to driving!!!! Also advising me to see my dealer for a check, it was serviced last month with nothing found...awaiting their reply!

With my Yeti 1.6 Diesel Greenline, recent trip Devon to Heathrow, plus running around Bucks/Berks, & home gave me 57mpg.

I wasn't hanging around.

As others have stated, drive it like a petrol, don't labour the engine.

My GL2 Estate I had from new to 20k miles averaged 72mpg on real brim-to-brim figures.

The dash display used to be quite optimistic showing mid 80s.

The GL2 works far better on a run, if you keep your speed sensible.

As I wasn't in a rush I just used to plod along at around 60-62mph.

As said above, labouring the engine kills fuel economy.

The gear change indicatior is terrible, because it makes you change up too early.

I'm very lead footed with mine!! :D

Under 30mph I'm in 3rd gear, 30(ish)-50mph I'm in 4th gear and 50+ I'm in 5th... Used to plod along at about 65mph on the M4, but I'm now averaging 70(ish) on the A40... I experimented at 65 and 70 and found no noticable difference in the mpg figures!

I sometimes have the 'Fruit Machine' mpg gauge on the maxi-dot, but most of the time I have my music up and ignore the figures till I top up the fuel and then I find out in Fuelly :)

If you go anywhere near 70mph in these 3 cylinder engines they are going to swallow fuel very quickly, personally I'd be doing 58-64 mph and no higher and you should see a real difference, don't change up to early and 55 up to 5th but any higher than mid 60 mph you'll have **** poor mpg

Agreed.

Although not impressive and nowhere near what Skoda claim, setting the cruise control to sit at 2000 rpm (approx. 65 mph) in 5th on M'ways/D'carriageways should see it creep up towards mid-60's MPG. (Assuming no major headwind component and dry roads - the Fabia is not aerodynamic after all).

So remember to watch your gear selection -

30-40mph = 3rd

40-60mph = 4th

60+ = 5th

...also run the next two tanks on premium diesel, then every 4th fuel on the same and you should see your MPG improve as the engine/exhaust components run cleaner.

At least doing this will enable you to approach Skoda having done all you can to improve the MPG, for I fear all they'll tell you in the first instance is to do all of the above.

My last fill up was premium, the car hated it!!!! Frequent dpf regen and stop start not working when it usually did. Happier on its current fill of normal.

Needs a couple of tanks to feel the benefit

Frequent dpf regen and stop start not working when it usually did.

This could be exactly what it needs. Premium diesel and an hour on the M'way doing 65 in 4th gear - get all that soot burned off.
