Driving to Switzerland

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am going to be driving to and around Switzerland in June and I understand that I need some type of permit to allow me to use the motorways. does anyone know what these cost and where I get them?

Thanks

When you enter Switzerland, you  will be charged for road tax. Its an annual payment, of 40 euro. you have to stick it too your wind screen, and if you remove it, it breaks apart, so you will have to pay again if you go back this year. See the link for further detail where  you can also pay in advance.

I went, Didnt understand the languages, just went in the free lane rather than the €50 lane. Didn't have a single problem! Police even waved me through. Though i did have an Euro LEZ sticker in the car, so maybe that helped in some way?

If you do not use the Motorway Network in Switzerland I don't believe that you require one, the official term is "Vignettes are compulsory in Switzerland on all national class 1 and 2 roads" so if you do not intend to use those roads you do not need to buy one..

in 2009 I drove from Chamonix to the Black Forest through Switzerland. Stayed one night in Leysin then one in Bern. Used the motorways but chanced not having a vignette. Did not have any problems. IIRC petrol was cheap in CH too
