Advice on changing/spraying grill.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

So I've got a silver Fabia vRS, I'm looking at getting a black grill for it and changing the badge on the front to a black and silver one rather than the green and silver one (same with the back badge eventually).

I've been told that the best thing to do is just spray the grill as opposed to get a new one, I'm not too keen on the chrome and I want it to look a bit more aggressive so I feel that blacking out the chrome would be the best way to do this, of course I'm open to any other ideas people have.

Anyone got any tips or advice on where I should start with this?

I'm a noob to all this so please excuse my lack of knowledge!

Thanks,

H

Nice idea! Not sure if I like carbon wrap though as it could look a bit tacky, any wrap in particular you have in mind?

Please heed my advice....  DO NOT spray it!!

I took ages to do mine properly with an amazing finish and I had a huge stone chip within a week.

Best bet is wrapped in my opinion

Advice taken! Thanks. I was suspicious of this happening.

Any guides on here with regards to wrapping body parts you could refer me to?

I'm planning a roof, spoiler, mirror and front grille wrap, the fabia is silver so was thinking of a glossy grey to match the vrs wheels I picked up, will get the pro's to do the outside stuff but planning to tackle the airvents, stereo surround and a few other inside panels myself using some carbon type wrap, been looking online and there are loads of different materials and finishes to choose from. Loads of tutorials available to help us novices but I think trial and error with a few practice parts with different sample materials before I commit to my final decision

I'm not sure about any guides on here to be honest. As above, there are a fair few guides online. The main thing is... patience!! ;)

+1 for wrapping. I had mine sprayed with plasti dip but didn't really like the matte look.

Highly recommend the vinyl you can get from b&q, as recommended by another member on here (Adam?). Just tried finding a link for you but my Internet is rubbish atm. It's like £7/8 for a roll which will do loads. I done my interior vents etc and grill and probably haven't used a third. Silly cheap too so have loads to practice with. Just use a hairdryer and take your time (managed to get the Mrs to do most of mine as i haven't really the patience lol).

Also, 'the range' do the exact vinyl for £2 cheaper too, so even better value for money.

I sprayed my grill with rattle cans from halfords, its all about the prep and the finish !!

3 coats of primer, 4/5 coats of top coat and 4 coats of clear !!  Looks great no chips and will last !!

Cheers

Brendan

If you paint it correctly, and use the correct process then it won't cheap any easier than the rest of the paint on your car.

People fall at the first hurdle when painting these and use s plastic primer, I'd strongly reccommend using an etch primer.

2 coats is enough. I'd then say 3 coats of base and 2 or 3 coats of clear with 15 minutes between coats.

Painted mine and it's been on 6 months with no chips.

Even if you use a gloss rsttle can, you must put a clear coat on.

2-pack lacquer needed to avoid stonechips in my opinion. Having spent years in my Dad's bodyshop...

Indeed, the only paints I use.

May have to try this wrapping technique then, I'll pop into B&Q when I'm off in a couple days and take a look at what they got, it's not as if there's permanent damage if I do mess up so this seems like the best option for me, thanks mate.

Thanks for the link, had been looking but couldn't find it as a search on their site

How does the vinyl stuff from b&q hold up with rain, wax etc etc? I've got some at home (did my air vents), but never considered using it for the grille. Mines currently plastidipped and now looking abit dull and off.

The B&Q stuff is good. Had mine wrapped with it for 18 month.

Nice one mate. Will give it a go!

Paint it, looks loads better. If you're not confident or worried you'll do a bad job take it to a body shop.
