Recommendation for a DAB on glass exterior aerial

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend a DAB stick on glass external aerial. It needs also to terminate eventually in fakra connector for a VW RCD510. I've found this but can't find an appropriate cable.

I've been told SMB is fakra in disguise and the SMB plug should push into the back of the radio fine anyone know for sure?

I have just fitted the RCD 510 Dab in my Oct VRS. I fitted this one http://www.dabonwheels.co.uk/Kinetic_DRA-6004_FM-AM_DAB_car_aerial.html , old aerial out, run the Dab lead phantom power lead following the  FM lead down the passenger side, the only panels to remove are the 'B' pillar & 'A' pillar all tucked up neatly into the roof lining, glove box out, tapped into 12v feed for the glove box light as the aerial is active, 'jobs a gud un' !! Just trying to find an adaptor for the FM side as its a Fakra to Hirschman. The Dab cable on the Kinetic DRA   ends with a SMB female & fits fine into the rear of the RCD. The reason I went with a roof mount is better reception, I've had a couple of drop outs, but only on the fringe stations

                       Hope this helps

That is the best solution paulb64 but sound quite difficult did you have to remove the headlining? and removing the A and B pillar is it just pull off? I thought the RCD 510 outputs phantom 12v up the aerial cable, in fact it must do because my old stick on inside- the- window DAB aerial was active and it used the phantom power to work?

Not difficult, just pull back the rubber door seals pop out the edge of the headlining, A  pillar has  5 clips start from the top & carefully pop them off, the B pillar has 2 at the top. Not sure on the phantom power but you could be right, next time i have the glove box out I'll  disconnect the power & see what happens It does have phantom power to FM thou. One other thing there is another plastic trim to remove at the back of the headlining which is a Ba... :swear:  to remove you need to pull it straight down to be able to access the nut for the aerial, very strong metal clips.

Oh & this is on a hatch not an estate.

Good timing, I've just put an RCD510 DAB in my FL Octavia but I fitted the Calearo aerial, which has an SMB connection for DAB (I used a Fakra converter at the radio end, but could have skipped this) and a Rast II connector for FM (I used Raku to Fakra converter to join the new aerial to existing Skoda FM lead). Aerial amplifier is getting 12V ignition switched power from the fusebox.

Everything seems to work, but I note in the secret menu that both FM #1 and DAB aerial appear as 'Off' or disconnected. Also have open circuit faults in VCDS for the two corresponding aerials, though I do need to clear these and verify if they reappear.

Is this right? I assume it may be something to do with the radio/CANBUS sensing no current draw from the phantom power it sends down the aerial leads, as the new aerial is powered directly, but it would be useful to know if others making similar changes have experienced the same.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm still a bit afraid of fitting the roof aerial though. I think you are correct Simon_levi the aerial appearing as 'off' is just detecting no current draw on the phantom power.

Same issues with me VCDS showing faults on Dab & FM connections but Dab is working great, as I mentioned I need a Hirschman to Fakra to connect the FM side which is working so I assume that its running off the diversity aerial side of the FM. I haven't checked the secret menu yet, will have a look tonight.

Thanks, good to know Paul, will be interested to hear if the secret menu is the same too.

Paddy, fitting a roof aerial is fairly simple. I would recommend dropping (most of) the headlining to do it so you can see exactly what you are doing and run the cables and secure them properly. You can leave the interior lights and sunvisors attached so the headlining will stay in the car and attached to the roof, you just work around the edges. Paul's already mentioned most of it, but a bit more in depth on a FL hatchback;

  • Remove plastic trim at back edge of headlining - just pull straight down with hands or trim removal lever. 5/6 strong metal clips hold it in place
  • Undo torx screws on the 2x C pillar trims and pull down enough that the headlining can get past the edge. May have a tiny pozi screw hidden under the rear door seals too, so check first!
  • Undo 2x torx screws on each of the grab handles and remove
  • Pull off B pillar top trim, just pops off. It'll slide down the seatbelt, no need to remove any further. Make sure you line it up properly when reattaching so seatbelt height slider works
  • Pull off A pillar trim on one side, just pops off.
  • Untuck headlining from door seals and you’ll have the back edge and both sides free from the roof, with loads of room to get your hands in and see everything easily.

After that you will see the aerial base, undo 22mm nut and pull old aerial off roof. Make sure the new one you buy is compatible with (~19mm I believe) square hole fitment and you can just bolt the new one in place, don’t overtighten (4NM). Connect cables up as necessary, run new cables and cable tie onto existing run, drop down A-pillar, under glovebox and behind the radio and run power the same way and over into the fusebox, or tap into the interior light instead.

Yes, meant to say that I ran around for a week without the 12v or the FM attached while I was waiting for a couple of connectors. DAB worked fine and FM worked on the diversity aerial, though I did notice that I wasn't getting many traffic announcements. Since connecting up the power and FM the usual announcements have returned and FM signal is far stronger.

Thanks for the instructions it probably sounds worse than it is! before I decide if anyone has the trough glass aerial i'd be interested to hear their findings!

Check secret menu on the RCD, showing full & good connection to Dab side, good on the FM side with one connection which must be the diversity side. Just need to find the Hischman to Fakra to complete.

Cheers Paul. Sounds like all is well, just have to ignore the aerial faults in VCDS then.

Out of interest, do you have any speaker faults registered in VCDS since the change? With the Bolero I had no issues showing, but with the RCD510-DAB I have an open circuit fault showing up on R20 (front left tweeter). I notice the coding for the RCD510DAB has tweeter monitoring active whereas I don't recall seeing that with Bolero.

With that said, I can't actually hear any problems with the speaker when playing music and it performs audio output tests for all speakers without any apparent fault. The only audible difference is the confirmation noise when the Radio is accessed by VCDS is very distorted, whereas with the Bolero I recall it being a clean beep sound. Briefly wondered if the pin-out differed between the radios, but the labelling is identical.

So can anyone recommend a DAB stick on glass external aerial?

Hi paddypaws,

I can recommend a Kinetic DEGA-4001 from DAB on wheels, had one for about 2 years attached to a Pioneer AVH-3500 DAB, nice and cheap with excellent reception, I regularly drive from Oxford to Wales and get very few drop outs,

Hardest part was getting the cable to rear of the car, I have a limo tint in the rear and just stuck it to the glass over that. Aerial does tend to whistle in some conditions but no great concern.
