Vrs harsh when starting ?

Featured Replies

Hi all

Went out in wife's 2005 vrs today and when I started it, it seemed very harsh. Hard to explain but I normally wait for glow plug to go out then turn key

It appears to lock then fires into life. Also noticed that the engine seemed to move abit as I had bonnet open looking through gap

This was noticed due to me looking at it as wife couldn't drive it coz the steering locked ( sorted in another thread )

It may just be me and it's been like it all the time but started to notice things as I've a new car which is a lot smoother

Anyone with rough/harsh starting ??? Can help

Cheers

Mine starts very similar to the above example. A definite 'shudder' and shaking of the engine just as it starts.

Whenever I sit in friend's cars, especially petrol ones, I am shocked when they set off as half the time I don't think it is even running!

The pd130 is definitely more of an agriculture sounding engine than a smooth running petrol. That is for sure.

If the shaking is excessive, could there be a problem with the engine mounts?

Thanks for the reply

Just to let you know I've just fitted a new battery due to the steering being locked in the the mornings or when it's been stood a bit, but with the new battery it's also starting a lot better and smoother than it was

Also I think the steering feels a lot better ( unless that's just in my head)

Glad it's starting better, perhaps that could of been a cause, the battery being on it's way out.

The steering may well have improved as power steering takes an awful lot of power, you'll notice this if you dry steer at night, sometimes you can see the headlights dim slightly as the power is sapped and diverted to the power steering instead.
