Caliper question

Featured Replies

Hi.

i have a question regarding my rear caliper on my vrs.I have seen other posts but not one relating to my actual fault.

my rear drivers caliper works fine when using the brake pedal but the hand brake cable will not work the rear drivers brake caliper when depressed.

also no note! the handbrake lever on the caliper gets stuck in the down position.

I have taken the wheel off and manually moved the handbrake lever on the calliper but it does not depress the caliper.

I have also checked the actual handbrake cable and this is working fine.

could anyone advise me what this could be or is it a good time to buy a new caliper.

cheers

Topic moved to octavia section.

The lever that acts on the piston has probably snapped off or become detached inside the caliper housing.

edit: there is also a tiny littls axial thrust bearing, plus a set if ball bearings in most calipers, when the hanbrake lever twists it forces a thrust screw into the back of the brake piston... you may be able to get it repaired by a caliper specialist, vw certainly dont list any spares for calipers except for guide pins.

sorry i didnt realise id posted in the wromg section

kind regards

My handbrake and actual rear brakes are total crap to be honest! So rather than faff around, I bought a pair of brand new TRW rear calipers in the correct green paint for less than £100 from eBay. Won't take long to swap them over, bleed them and enjoy having a handbrake and foot brake that works.

Another question if I may.

Is ot better to replace both calipers or just the one side.

No theres no need to replace calipers in pairs.
