Turbo ate itself at 58k

Featured Replies

Just had the post mortem back from the garage and the verdict is the worst possible! Was coming down a straight after overtaking and without warning lost boost. Wasn't even whistling before hand!

Looks like the best part of a grand to get it all sorted, poor fab [emoji26]

Best hope nothing els has been affected.

Same happened to mine.can you do it yourself. It's not that hard and all in cost me £850, brand new pd150 turbo plus a few little goodies.

It's always best to DIY if you can, one to make sure the job is done properly and two to save money.

Xman on here can supply a turbo and it could be a time to upgrade considering you're going to have to change it anyway.

Sorry to hear that it's blown

But seriously... You can fix that for under £500 and upgrade at the same time.

Turbo is a doddle to change.

I would make sure 100% no other issues, causing a turbo to pop after 58k .. maybe just bad luck, but you dont want the new one poping on the same mileage.

When you say it ate itself, can you be a bit more specific? Have you seen the turbo or any pictures of it?

This might give you an indication of what caused it to fail and possibly how much crap could be lurking in your intercooler.

Also do you know if the turbo that you say has done 58k, has actually done 58k or could it have been replaced before you got the car? Just a thought as there could be an underlying issue and someone just stuck a cheap turbo on to sell the car without addressing the problem. That's just a thought though, could be a mile off lol.

Well I've not seen pictures, the garage have said it's got oil seals gone everywhere pretty much all the way to the inter cooler and some debris so it's a turbo, plus everything else in-between. Typical for it to happen on Friday the 13th!

I personally wouldn't describe the seals in the boost pipes as oil seals and to have oil seapage on the pipework from the turbo to the intercooler isn't really abnormal. As far as having bits of turbo floating around, that is unfortunately lol. If there is floods of oil coming through the pipes from the turbo then that may be where your turbo problems originally stemmed from.

Try and get some pictures though mate. The garages, dare I say it, will always give you the worst case scenario as, 1. They can do a thorough job and make sure you don't go back with a recurring problem and 2. It's their livelihood and they need to make money!

Just got the car back today, couldn't get any pictures as it went away to a specialist to get refurbished. The mechanic did say he had never seen a turbo like it right enough.

No play in the shaft at all the impeller was just completely in bits and gone walkabout.

Total bill equalling £820 :(

That is exactly the same thing Skoda in Derby said to me when they did my previous turbo! lol

I would have done it myself, but I don't have the space or the time it would have taken me to learn as I go and do a good job of it!

It took me a day to do my first turbo swap. Ultimately if you've got a good job and a good turbo it shouldn't need doing again whilst you've got the car? Also, should imagine you've got warranty on the job and turbo?

I think the old "I've never seen anything like that turbo failure" is such a cop out for, "we haven't got a clue why it failed and can't really be arsed to investigate as it's nothing obvious" lol.

If the compressor has broken up the. Wouldn't that be due to excess tip speed?

I suppose either way it isn't very reassuring if no cause was diagnosed for the effect as it could just happen again.

Don't know about much about Fabias in general yet. But I rebuilt 3 turbos myself using kits and and sending off to get balanced. And they are going strong. Cost absolute pennies compared to cost of paying for Refurb or new. And was surprisingly easy job if you enjoy fiddling with small parts!

How much was the balancing though?

I would highly recommend a group 11 log using 3rd gear from low rpm to 4500rpm. This will show you if boost is controlled or not...
