Goodbye Scout 1.9TDI........Hello SE 1.2TSI DSG

Featured Replies

Hi

Can you tell me what mpg you are getting, I have a 1.9 tdi and I'd like to change for the 1.2 DSG but not to sure what the true mpg is like, I can get about 53mpg at 70mph on the motorway and about 45mpg around town

Hi Steve.

MPG figures for my 1.9TDI were in the same range as yours.  I've only owned my 1.2DSG for a few days but mpg figures seem around 5 lower.

For me, the increase in fuel consumption is partly offset by the lower cost of insurance.

And in Birmingham at least, petrol is around 10p per litre cheaper than diesel.

So, running costs are not especially different.

But the 1.2TSI / DSG combination is an absolute joy to drive.  The 1.9TDI seems positively agricultural in comparison.

Hi

Thanks for the info, I think I can live with 5 mpg less and like you said petrol is a bit cheaper than derv, think I may just take a DSG for a spin.

Be prepared to be won over!

I love diesels and have owned them exclusively for twenty-something years.

But the 1.2TSI is more diesel-like (in terms of low down torque) than any other petrol engine I have driven.

DSG is the icing on the cake.

Just noticed your post count.  Welcome to Briskoda.

Last weekend I drove an around trip from London to Tamworth (260 miles) I managed 50 mpg on the way there at around 65-70 mph and 54 mpg on the return journey. The 1.2 tsi engine has diesel economy if driven sensibly.

Here's my Spritmonitor profile for the Roomster with 1.2 TSI and DSG.

It could be more economical, but it's powerful enough and DSG is every nice. :)

Don't forget if you are buying a new Car of any sort until the engine has a few miles under it's belt you'll not achieve the full MPG or power for that matter. Have to say from what I've seen of my TSI can't wait until it's losened up a bit.

Hello Steve Ellis and welcome to the forum. You should be able to improve on those MPG figures for your 1.9PD Tdi, I use Millers Oil and their EcoMax fuel additive, also Goodyear Efficient Grip tyres for lower rolling-resistance (and they're quiet!), also ensure handbrake cabling free and rear discs not dragging/binding, and consider replacing the front suspension arm rear bushes ("console bushes") with firmer ones, certainly ensure front tracking is right, and tyre pressures are as per settings inside fuel filler flap, OK mine has been remapped by Darkside Developments, but you should be able to get nearer 60mpg motorway and 50mpg town; depends how hilly, how many passengers/loading, and how much stop-start you do. And driving style makes a big difference; anticipation is vital to minimize wastage through having to use the brakes to kill excess speed/momentum.

Good luck, enjoy your Roomster, have you considered becoming a Freedom Member? And we've a National Meet on June 21st!.

Hi Richard

Thanks for the info on how to increase the mpg on my 1.9tdi, I don't think I will go down that road the cas has got 155k on the clock now so I think it's time for a change, and I do about 30k a year

I think I will try out the 1.2dsg, but I do need a auto, it's a shame they don't fit the box in the derv model.

And what is a freedom member?

And robjon any updates on your 1.2 dsg mpg.

Hi Steve

Freedom is a way of supporting this excellent website.  Click on the word FREEDOM in my signature for further information.

Since purchasing my 1.2, family issues have caused me to use the car for only short journeys where the engine barely has chance to warm up.  Even here, the computer shows 38mpg average.  I'm hoping to take a touring holiday soon and I'll report back with some more realistic figures.
