Smokey 2002 1.9TDI

Featured Replies

Hi - my recently purchased 1.9TDI produces a HELL OF A LOT of smoke after cold start, which clears after around a minute.  It really is bad.

Warm starts are no problem and otherwise the car seems to run fine.  Has 140k miles on clock.

I'm new to diesels so what sort of aults should i be looking for?

Any advice appreciated.

  • Got a meter onto the plugs today.  Two reading approx 0.6 / 0.7 ohms and two not changing the meter reading at all, so it stayed at "1"   That may explain a few things.  Picked up a new set at £7.50

Check your egr valve and give your turbo a Mr muscle clean as well will make the world of difference

What colour smoke is it? As its only on cold start (I presume 1st start of the day?) I would guess the glow plugs might be the fault?

Hope that helps a bit?

Does the engine sound different when it is running cold? Do You hear a sort of tapping noise that disappears after that minute or so?

OK thanks for the replies  :)

The smoke is a very pale grey colour and smells of, diesel.

When ignition switched on, when engine cold, all the dash lights come up but I notice the glow plug light goes out after about half a second whilst all the other lights are on for 2/3 seconds or so before going out.  I was under impression the glow plug light would stay on until motor ready to be started, but this is from memory of occasional diesel truck at work many years ago.

So what am I looking for with glow plugs - taking apart and cleaning, replacement?

Try unplugging the coolant temp sensor, then the coil light should stay on for about 20 seconds.

Replace all 4 glow plugs, cheapest option. Greyish smoke is unburnt diesel, new glow plugs will cure it in my opinion.

OK after a bit of research (I have no manual yet) I guess you mean this one, about half way down motor at rear LHS behind air filter and battery etc....

.....in which case yes disconnected as you can see and dashboard glow plug lamp stays on for around 10 seconds or thereabouts.

Does that help identify problem?

Sorry, despite maintaining most of my cars/bikes for decades, I'm a total novice with diesels

That's the badger. How does it start with the CTS disconnected? Any better?

Is the car remaped ? Check your egr, glow plugs are only needed when it's really cold outside like minus degrees, by what you described its just unburnt fuel coming out the back, I had a pd150 seat leon and it used to kick out black smoke on cold start ups as it was mapped and had a straight through miltek

The glow plugs do very little on the pd engines and the OP has an injection pump diesel, so glow plugs are still the most likely cause.

I'm on my phone so can't see all the info on the right

SInce i bought mine at 1 year old (14k miles) it smoked on start up, a chunk of light grey smoke. More often than not it wasn't even on very cold mornings. Had it checked out under warranty and glow plugs and everything else was fine. It suprised me as i had a Golf TDI before that which didn't smoke on start up up to the point i sold it with 130k miles.

However, my car is now 12 yrs old with 170k miles and still lets out a puff of smoke every morning, but once it's had its initial 'cough' it doesn't smoke again.

Might be something or nothing. Maybe not relevant, but my car is parked on a slight hill facing downwards each night (perhaps some excess fuel gathers somewhere).

Mine's smoked on start up from cold cold (after 9 hours sat outside work as well as overnights) since I bought it at 3ish years old. The smoke clears after a second or so.

Skoda dealer and various VAG specialists reckon this is normal, particularly since the glowplugs are only active below 5C. If it really bothers you, try "double-plugging" it before using the starter.

Oh and cmcm789, I'm virtually always parked on the flat. If I'm not, its 50/50 which end is high.

With the sensor disconnected the start us was just the same - heaps of pale grey smoke for a good minute.  Not just the odd puff here - its a full on cloud

Maybe You could post a video where we can see how does the starting look and sound like?

Still think glow plugs.

Ha - checked docs and it looks like mine is  ASV***** so thanks again.  Will get to the bottom of this yet, as the actress said to the bishop  e

They are probably right, but the ones simspj linked to are cheaper from ECP. I fitted Beru ones to my old car and they were fine.

Euro car parts is where I got mine from. Here's a link to them. Mines an ASV engine code too.
